 | AVG 8 link scanner causes Firefox to crash? Everytime I uses Google to search for things while the link scanner is scanning the links, Firefox will crash and shutdown by itself. Does anyone have this problem? |
|
 | Yes I have had the same problem. I disabled the link scanner and no more problem. |
|
 | Does the link scanner really make surfing the web any safer? |
|
 | reply to cerdan AVG 8 link scanner a problem with Internet Explorer 7.0 too running XP Prof SP2. Just installed AVG 8 and rebooted and open Internet Explorer and um it won't open just disappears i.e. crashes. Went into AVG program menu and took off link scanner and now Internet Explorer works again. Not impressed with this situation. Been a big AVG user for a number of years but now wondering if it's time to stop. |
|
 | reply to cerdan I had the same problem. After disabling link scanner (which comes with a nasty red exclamation sign in my shortcuts bar)no more FF crashes. |

I do not known about safer; but it sure Slower with it on. This is another example of a good product being morphed into a bloated non performer. I have used AVG for a few years and now considering changing to some other AV. BTW I sent an Email to AVG support to complained about the link scanner and Exclamation point in the tray; I got this answer..........
"Dear Sir/Madam,
thank you for your email.
We apologize for any inconveniences this issue might have caused you.
We would like to inform you that the "ignore faulty condition of component" option is currently not available in AVG 8.0.
However it will be available in the near future. As soon as we release the new built with this feature we will inform you.
In case you would like to uninstall AVG Link Scanner you need to uninstall AVG Web Shield this way:
1. Download the latest installation file from this webpage:
»www.avg.com/download?prd=aav (AVG Anti-Virus 8.0)
- When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the internet, but click the "Save" button and choose a location, where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
2. Please check whether you are logged under some account with administrative rights. For more details, please visit this FAQ: »www.avg.com/faq?num=1196
3. Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG_...) and launch it. - Choose the "Add or remove components" option and follow the wizard. - You can see the list of components available with your AVG license and you can uncheck AVG Web Shield . - When finished, please restart the computer.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

 | reply to cerdan I installed the free version. I followed the instructions listed in the above post to uninstall the web shield. However, when I got to the screen to deselect the web shield, there was no option for that.
I agree that this is so lame. I also emailed AVG about the issue with the link scanner and wanting to remove it. |

 | To disable the link scanner and are using Firefox. You can disable it in Firefox using addons from the Tools menu selection. Just click on disable and restart Firefox. This will stop the red exclamation. |

 | reply to cerdan One note, that may be obvious. The Link Scanner is called AVG Safe Search in the Firefox/Tools/Add-Ons menu.

 | Thanks for the advice, this is a problem that's been irritating me for a while and it was so simple to sort out in the end (when you know how!!). |
|
 | Can this AVG Safe Search be disabled in IE 7 as well? |
|
 | reply to cerdan Yes,
Someone on another thread, I believe, did just that.
Not on IE now, but same procedure as for FF.

 | reply to cerdan So the fact that Firefox has crashed several times in the last few days is not only my problem, good to know. Probably will uninstall it (AVG) and use the older version or none at all, we'll see. Anyway, thanks for anyone who replied here for the information |

 | reply to cerdan For AVG Free 8 on Internet Explorer, I did the following:
-Disable Link Scanner in AVG.
-Set AVG tray icon to force-hide so I'm not staring at that ugly error-state icon (Right-Click over taskbar, select "Properties", then click "Customize" button under the "Taskbar" sheet).
-Disable AVG Safe-Surf addon for Internet Explorer (ALT key, Tools menu/Internet Options, change to "Programs" sheet, click "Manage Add-Ons" button, find and disable AVG SafeSurf dll).
I'm beginning to see things the same way as the other poster who thinks this is unacceptable bloat and it's time to switch. Yes, some people need this kind of supervision or they'll destroy a computer in less than six months (I've worked on one like this a couple times). But for those of us who don't want it, the feature should be clealy, easily, and completely disabled or removed without having to jump through hoops.
AVG is losing sight of what made their product good. |

 | reply to cerdan Thanks for the instructions to disable the Link Scanner in Firefox posted by an earlier user in this thread. However, what I find disturbing is that AVG managed to install the 'AVG Safe Search 8.0' in Firefox Add-ons in the first place, without my permission. This is the behaviour of a virus and not something an anti-virus vendor should be doing. |

 | Could this link scanner thing also be responsible for the crash when I do a scan? |
|
