I think this is BS that they dont put channels that where in the clear in analog in the clear as QAM channels... but whatever... they just are hungry for $4 a month per box... (we have 6 tv's now and watch these channels a good bit on them.. already have 2 boxes! for some channels....)
On 7/15/2008 changes will happen in the Blairsville head end area (Blairsville, Derry, Latrobe, Indiana, etc)
Oxygen - 76 to 242 Hallmark - 35 to 255 TruTV - 71 to 259 TVGN - 59 to 264 EWTN - 54 to 266 MSNBC - 57 to 266 SHOPNBC - Removed PIN - Removed FOX News - 72 to 26 FYI - 73 to 24 Bravo - 75 to 59 Travel - 77 to 54 Versus - 26 to 31 Golf - 39 to 33 PCNC - 31 to 39 WTBS - 33 to 35
and comcast "confirms" that the digitals will be encrypted which just makes me mad that we HAVE to rent a box to see channels we never needed a box for when our digital tv's have qam tuners in them... I can see encrypting premium channels, but this encrypt everything digital except broadcast stations to make money is BS since we already pay for the service to start with... they are just milking us for money per TV now after the 1st one...
I'm starting to feel like this is the 80's again where they wanted you to rent analog boxes to watch cable... (at least in our area under adelphia we had to...) |

| I had the same sentiments to be honest... it feels like it's going back to the old rules of yester-year where they'd have you renting another box or using fear tactics to scare you into not having more than 1 outlet in your house (at least, that's how it was where I grew up). Just when it looks like we're past that, it starts up again...
Also, MSNBC and EWTN are sharing the same channel? Or is EWTN supposed to be 265? o_O |

@comcast.net | reply to neufuse Face it, by the end of next year if you want anything beyond limited basic you will need a box on each TV. There might be a few in the clear QAM channels but not many. |

| no one ever has to "face it"... It was BS in the 80's how cable ran their networks nickle and dimeing your for everything down to how many plugs you had in your house (adelphia use to charge $1 per TV connected to a cable line on a splitter! not even for a box, but a splitter!) and all that was forced out by the FCC and with cable ready tv's and all that fun stuff... now we have digital ready tv's and we're going right back to the pay us per TV model... if people don't speak up like they did in the past cable will just push itself right back there |

@comcast.net | reply to neufuse I don't like the prospect of it any more than you do,but do you think the FCC or any other government entity will do anything about it? |

| reply to neufuse said by neufuse :no one ever has to "face it"... I look at it this way, because I deal with this daily- Theft. If there is nothing to steal there is no theft. Nothing unencrypted, nothing to get without a box, completely secure system. No ingress from vandalism, no vandalism to steal an unusable signal. I truly think everything should be encrypted.
I know my opinion counts for very little.. but a lot of issues are tracked back to the above mentioned actions. -- CableTechs.org/"Horrible People with Integrity" |

2 edits | reply to CableTool I don't mind stuff being encrypted as long as there is a way we can get a device from say comcast that they can authorize on their network that we do not have to pay for monthly (like we can do with cable modems).. Encryption isn't the problem, its the fact we have to pay more for it ontop of the good amount we pay to start with... I'd rather pay $100 up front for an autorized system then $3-$5 per month per TV... In our house for cable cards on each of the digital tv's they quoted us a crazy price per month... it was almost as much as the cable itself... (this is mainly because we have 2 dvr's in HD)... they wanted HD service fee PER TV! and CableCard fee of $2.50 per TV... and HD service was like $6.99 per tv... which I dont know if the person was wrong or what but I thought HD service was per house... we have 2 HD DVR's now and only pay $0! for HD service.. it even says on the bill HD Service $0.00... |

Well, that's the idea behind the FCC's separable security mandate - ideally, you'll eventually be able to go into your favorite big-box electronics store, pick out the brand/model STB/DVR/whatever you prefer, and then get what amounts to a cablecard from your local cable provider to authorize it. That's probably still a ways off yet, what with Tru2way still being in its infancy, but that's more or less the idea there. |

We are talking about this in the "Analog Channels Migration" post already. The reason you may be required to rent a box isn't because of digital. Areas that already require cable boxes for analog channels (metro/city like areas sometimes) will continue to do the same, due to high theft rates or other technology reasons for those (rare) communities. This isn't going to affect the majority of Comcast customers. If your area doesn't currently require a cable box for analog, then you were most likely given mis-information by the representative you spoke with.
As I said in the "Analog Migration" post - if you have a Digital (DTV) ready/built-in-tuner Television, you will be all set when the channels are moved into digital formats, because your TV will have the tuner that can receive the Digital Signals. If you don't then you will need a cable box to convert the Digital signal to analog.
Its the same thing just like you said, back in the 80s when you had to have a Cable-Ready TV or you had to get a Analog cable box to get the channels on your old TV set. |
