1 edit | [Vista] File and Printer Sharing
I'm having a heck of a time getting file and printer sharing to work on my Vista Home Premium. I've got shared folders on my Windows XP Home SP2 PC and when I try to access the shares, I get the above error. When I click on the Diagnose button, it says there are no problems and then wants to send the information to MS. I've tried everything that MS recommends.
1. Turned off password protected sharing. 2. Removed password from the user accounts on both machines. 3. Turned off firewalls on both machines. 4. Installed the LLTDR patch on the XP Home PC. 5. Made the workgroup the same on both computers (WORKGROUP) 6. Restarted the XP PC in safe mode and set permissions to allow everyone full access. 7. Pulled out most of my hair!
Anyone have any ideas as to why I continue to get the above error? My scalp would appreciate it.

Edit: P.S. Forgot to add this... I can access the Shared folders on the Vista PC from the XP PC. That's what is making it so crazy. Why can I access one way and not the other?

| reply to beldin On the computer you cannot access shares (Windows XP) can you check following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
In the right-hand window is a value RestrictAnonymous
If the value for RestrictAnonymous is not 0 change the value to 0 and reboot the computer.
Confirm that the registry change you made "stuck" and then try accessing shares from Vista again. |

I guess I could move the HDD to the Vista PC, but I'd prefer not to do that. The vista PC is SATA and I don't want to slow the system down by adding an old EIDE drive to the mix.

1 edit | here's a stupid idea if you can access the shared folders using vista why not put the stuff in there you need shared until you find a workaround?
look at the network sharing center in vista and turn off password portected sharing and see if that helps |
