| Petitioning AT&T for DSL service in my neighborhood: Advice?
Hi There,
I live about 10 miles outside of Nevada City, CA, probaby 8 miles beyond the last house close enough to the DSLAM/CMUX to get service. There are about 100 homes within a 2-mile radius of me and we don't have cable or DSL. An acquaintance at Comcast says they'll "never" run a cable up to where we are, but I harbor hopes for AT&T, since we do have POTS from them. I can't imagine this would cost AT&T more than a single repeater, but I don't know what the break-even is for them to add it.
Has anyone gone through the process of petitioning AT&T to add DSL service to an unserviced area? Any thoughts about what works and doesn't work?
Thanks!

| I wouldn't hold my breath. In all of Northern Sacramento county (densely populated area) there are only 3 DSL COs: Rio Linda, McClellan AFB, and a CO just West of the UP tracks in North Highlands. In the rest of Sacramento County there are still only a handful of COs and they haven't exactly bent over backwards to build DSLAMs. So in all of our county, with it's million or so residents, you have less than a dozen DSL type outlets. SBC promised RTs years ago with it's "Project Pronto" which was definitely not pronto since it never happened.
If at&t won't add infrastructure in densely populated Sacramento County, I doubt they'd spend any money for 100 homes up in the hills. But I could be wrong . . . |

What would be needed is an RT (Remote Terminal); and, if they haven't already got one past the planning stage, they probably won't build one. I don't really know how effective an RT equipped DSLAM would be at serving 100 homes in your part of Placer County.
My old CO (WTLDCA12; Wheatland) does not show as DSLAM equipped, and, in any case, Sheridan was probably over three miles out from there. At least 250 people there, when I left. Still no DSL to this day. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

@direcpc.com | reply to shirt Thanks, Norm and Preston. Both for the correction of my terminology and the confirmation that I expect too much of at&t.
Guess I'm stuck with satellite until someone accidentally shoots it down. Then it's back to dialup... |

There is no process, and ATT does need customers to generate revenue. Frequently checking availability on ATT web site may trigger facilities review. Instead try petitioning the CPUC and demand universal service regulations. In the meantime look into a wireless PtP link. |

| reply to public Thanks, maybe I will yell at the CPUC. Gotta yell at somebody!
We can't get wireless on our ridge, although my local provider was considering tossing up a tower in the area. They've changed their minds. Even if they did, their services are so expensive I'd be paying over 300/month just to exceed the throughput I get from Hughes. |

Form a coop and setup your own wisp. 10 mile PtP link is easy if you have a line of sight. |
