| [TWC] New HDTV, Small Picture Size
Curious as to what we need to fix this problem if it is possible. We just purchased a Samsung Series 4 42" HD Plasma tv, but we don't have the option to have the picture size set to "wide fit" and we can't even choose "scan" for the picture size.
We do have TW HD tv channels, but we have to have them in the 16:9 format. I don't know why the hell we paid all this movie for a 42" tv, paying extra for HD tv channels, and yet the picture is about the same size on the old 32" CRT tv we just replaced. Ready to take the 42" one back |

| Basically your problem is that the TV shows a 4:3 picture on your widescreen 16:9 TV, so you have black bars on the sides?
1. What model box? Different boxes are configured differently. 2. How is the box connected to the TV? HDMI, DVI, component (red/green/blue RCAs), s-video, video (yellow RCA), or coax. 3. What channels? Some don't show HD or 16:9 all the time. 4. What shows? Some just aren't 16:9 yet. |

Hope this helps....JL |

| reply to thesimonsens I had a similar problem with my Sony 40". After much fiddling around I found that the TW cable box was set up to output everything as 1080i, so 4:3 pictures got sent to the TV as 4:3 with sidebars so the TV would not "fit" it to the screen.
To remedy this I reprogrammed the box to send all channels to the TV in their native format 480, 720 1080 etc and then I set up the TV to "fit" the 4:3 channels to the screen. Now it fits those SD channels to fill the screen and does not alter the 16:9 channels.
My TW box is an SA 8300 HD DVR and I followed the detailed set up screen vs the "easy" one which TW recommends you use. |

| reply to thesimonsens To make sure I understand: when you watch a 4:3 program (from a digital or analog station), you have black bars on the right and left? When you watch a 16:9 program from a digital channel it fills the screen? When you watch a movie from an HD channel you may or may not have bars on the top and bottom?
If so, that is exactly what you are supposed to watch.
This way, you are seeing each show the way it was created, losing no content from the top and bottom or right and left, with no stretching, squishing, or other distortion to fit it in a particular screen shape.
This is why you bought a 16:9 set! 16:9 shows will be larger than your old set, but 4:3 or other aspect-ratio shows might be smaller.
Yes, use HDMI if possible. Yes, turn on your TV, turn offyour cable box and hit Menu - use this to change the default setting of 16:9, pan and scan, etc., to your taste. |

In 4:3 mode, the 42" widescreen is like a 34" screen. |

| reply to thesimonsens Thank you all so much for your replies. I guess th eproblem is not having an HDMI cord. The guy who set up the Time Warner install said he left us one, but what he actually left was a USB cable for our high speed internet! Ahhh! So now we are having problems finding an HDMI cord around here. We looked at Best Buy here but wasn't able to find it. GUess we may have to order it online
Another stupid HD question. My husband just said he was trying to record an HD channel just to test it out, but it wouldnt record the channel. Instead it switched over to the non-HD channel of the show he was watching (Deadliest Catch) and recorded it there. Is this because we don't have the HDMI yet and are using component cables?
Thank you again |

| You don't really need the HDMI cable, component should work fine.
What model cable box do you have?
