They had this in Tucson while I was there...

They had this in Tucson while I lived there 2000-2002. I tried to get it but was shadowed from their tower site on Tucson Mountain by a ridge. Since Comcast didn't offer cable Internet there yet, I wound up getting Qwest DSL via a remote terminal. I was on a waiting list for almost 90 days. 50 bucks a month for 640/256 kbps DSL via a remote terminal. Actually, it wasn't bad until they force migrated us over to MSN...You can read my horror stories about that in my reviews...

My friend had it and it wasn't bad for downloading and web browsing, but would have been useless for things like VOIP.
IIRC it was 2.5 megs down, 256K up, but typically did better then that (it was a shared service).

The band this operates in used to be known as MDS or multipoint distribution service. It was for schools and others to send video from one point to many locations. It was also used for wireless cable at one time. I'm curious about what the band has been re-allocated to-MDS demand has virtually been zero these past few years.

MDS was de-officialized by FCC, and renamed Broadband Radio Service (BRS). Its being planned for WiMAX now by Sprint, but FCC never put any mandatory buildout or any requirements to use the spectrum for anything, so it will lie vacant forever probably. Sprint is under no obligation to ever do anything with the spectrum and there is no requirment to have service on it. Sprint already sat on it for a decade or more.
