Is it safe to overinstall the old 4.0 without losing settings?

Also, is the update via 4.0 will be patches only for a full installer?

I just installed 4.1 and it retained all my setting while removing the old 4.0 without a reboot.

edit: If you have SAS set to check for program updates when the application starts then yes it will download updates for the program as well as patches.
