| [XP Home] Corrupt SAM file - Missing User Names on Welcome Scree
This has been a recurring problem which I can easily fix when it occurs, but the problem keeps coming back.
»support.microsoft.com/kb/316751
One of our office PCs (Gateway running XP Home) occasionally boots up with no user names on the welcome screen. Using an NTFS boot CD, I copy the SAM from \windows\repair to the overwrite the corrupt one in the system32\config directory.
Everything is fine until days/weeks/months later, when the same thing happens. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Any clues as to why this keeps happening and perhaps how I can prevent it? Will I have to do a complete reinstall of XP to fix it? Is it a problem with the HD? Is the PC being possessed by forces of evil?
Thanks in advance for any help. -- "I love mankind. It's people I can't stand."

My guess is 'hardware problem' (disk, disk controller, cables..) |
