Re: [OC] EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR

heating/cooling really depends on the case, and extra fans and the temperature of room if you run air cooling.
My video card idle temperature varies. For example; few days ago it was 49, now 54. Its 22c right now in the room.
my cpu idle varies alot too because the room is non heatable, so in winter time its mad cold and cpu idles at 10c right now idles at 30c.
I have antec 900 case and 120 tuniq tower, and video card stock cooler. Case and cpu coolers set to max, video card to 85%.
It really depends on conditions around and inside your machine.

My 8800 GTS idles at 71C. Peaks between 85 and 90C during ATItool.
Man, you need better cooling. I have never seen 71C ever, even when over clocking, and running modern games on my 8800 GTS.
I'm using the stock cooling solution provided by EVGA on the card. Even at stock speeds, this card idled in the high 60's. I'm sure if this was excessively high, EVGA would have done a better job on the design. The card has been running fine for over a year. No problems. For me... If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I'm assuming that I have extremely good case cooling then. I have a huge Lian Li server case with really good case fans.

I still can't believe the other posters card only goes up 1C during game play.

Mine idles at 48C, and goes up to about 62C during COD 4, and BF 2142. Temps reported from Everest, and Riva tuner.

Are you saying your card only goes up 1C during game play?
Yes. And that's using Everest to monitor the temps.

My 8800GTS 512 idles at 73C and hits 74C during heavy game playing. It's fine.

Video card CPUs are designed to tolerate and operate at much higher temps than our system CPUs. While we tend to panic when system CPUs hit 60C, the video CPUs are very happy at 80C+. My 8800 GTS idles at 71C. Peaks between 85 and 90C during ATItool.

When atiTool starts causing crashes, you've pushed the CPU or memory well beyond its limits and have to back off.

Generally speaking, these cards do not have a huge amount of headroom as EVGA has already boosted the speeds above the Nvidia spec. I had to drop mine a little below the level ATItool found as the max since I'd see sporadic problems that didn't show up in ATItool.

JSimm, i read that, i might try this method. Thanks a lot for the posts.

edit: atittool even at default settings keeps lagging badlly if 3dview is open.
When i tried to find out max core temp, at 669 mhz core speed i got blue screen and pc restarted. I dont get it why my screen keeps freezin even on default settings in atitools when 3dview is open?

edit2: i am running at 645/1493/910 and fan set to 85, and i used evga tool. I see no artifacts and games doesn't crash. Still wondering what is safe temperature for video card? It idles at 47-50.

This article provides a good overview of the tools and process for overclocking the 8800 series - including modding the BIOS for a permanent OC: »benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?o···temid=81

I used this process on my 8800 GTS and its been running fine for over a year.

ALLRITE, i raised following:

core clock: from 513 to 600 so far
shader clock: from 1188 to 1389
memory clock: 792 to 840

to me its working fine, but i am going to stop here because i dont know much about overheating in video cards. My antec 900 case is set on max, but still i dont want to mess my video card up so i'll wait for suggestions from you guys, about overheating, monitoring and such.

all right, i am on it...

EDIT: Allrite, i read the article, its very handy. It explains a lot. It seems while for processor oc is better to do it thru bios, in overclocking of video card is different-- much more secure and easier way is... software overclock. I'll go with riva. Thanks for the link.

Question is, in the article there was no mention of safe temperature range, or temperature monitoring. Can anyone tell me about it?

Everything else seems pretty clear... small raises of mhz and then checking if it works stable. When you reach the crash or artifacts, go lil bit back and you all set. Am i right?

thanks

edit2: is it ok if i would be runnin 3dmark06 to check for artifacts instead of a game everytime i raise frequencies?

Hello, previously i have had experiences with overclocking proc and rams, but i never did oc of video card.
how is it done? can video card be oc'ed thru bios? i heard something about riva tuner program. Which way is safer/better/more stable?
i built this system in july 07, and always had in mind to overclock it. I did some basic oc, but now i want to push my machine to the limit and get the best of it. So i am looking for advise, wise thoughts and important info such as, how should i monitor video card's temperature, what is considered hot, and in what range temperature should be and things of that nature.

Thanks in advance

System:
e6600 intel core duo @ 3.3 Ghz stock voltages. 120 tuniq tower set to max
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1G DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel
250 gb hhd WD 7200rpm
ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI
antec 900 set to max

p.s. i hope i provided enough info, if not, please let me know.
