I must say...ahem... "YAY"

Im a huge fan of UVerse, beats the snot out of TWC. Cant wait to get my 2 hd at once.
@hookem99
It takes a couple hours for an install because they do a decent amount of work. more then cable has ever done or will do in just one call. Plus its a free install. They usually pair up the crews and the others could be there to learn how to do it.

@goober
your 2 hd streams are per dwelling. Multiple tvs do throw a wrench in the process, but with multi-room dvr should help relieve the problem. Multi rooms can access the single dvr. Plus there is no crime in watching a show in sd. Is there anything then can show multiple HD streams at once? TWC and Comcast always locked me out at 2.

Seriously, is this a joke post?

2 HD streams per dwelling = ludicrous. More than one HDTV and you'd be hosed (don't give me the multi-room DVR BS, it's not a hot seller).

Meanwhile with FiOS or other cable systems you could have 14 HD streams going on at the same time in theory. 7 HD STBs watching and recording one ch. while recording another.

Comcast has no problem with 4 HD streams. We've had no problems in Chicago.

Assuming the signal comming to your house can handle that many Digital boxes, yes even for cable there are limits.

Yep. In cable and FiOS, HD is broadcasted, same signal is sent to all outlets/sets/boxes/tvs. So your only limited by billing system and number of splitters on the coax (unless you/cable tv provider puts an amp in your house, or cable tech runs a 2nd drop for some of the TVs).

Actually, with FiOS you can have more than that. While you can only have 7 IP addressable devices hooked up, giving you up to 14 HD feeds if you get 7 DVRs, you can have 3 non-IP addressable devices as well, giving you still more access. So, if you really go nuts, and say you get 7 HD DVRs (addressable devices), and 3 cable cards (non-addressable devices) you could get all of your HD channels in 17 separate feeds. And you could go further still. They carry locals and digital music in the clear, so you could get a TV with a QAM tuner, and get your local HD channels in the clear. The only limit with THAT is how much power is coming out of the ONT, and since the ONT runs pretty darn hot, you can get alot of HD feeds all at the same time.

One other point, and I may be wrong about this, but I think I got this right. Let's say you get 7 HD DVRs from Verizon, and 3 M cable cards (which should be available soon) for 3 TiVo DVRs. Well now you actually have access to 20 HD feeds if you want. Again, not including the locals you would get via a QAM tuner.

The limit they're not taking about though is the max channel limit that has to be sent across to all subs. They have to transmit every channel at all times. IPTV's limit is sectional bandwidth. In 10-15 years IPTV will not have any limitation once the last mile catches up and it'll have better functionality.

Yeah, too bad my U-verse doesn't have Whole Home DVR. I am getting sick of only being able to watch the DVR on the TV is hooked up to.

Which is why FiOS will be full IPTV within the next few years. Although I think the QAM expansion that they're undergoing will allow them to delay that transition for some time. Once done, they'll have alot of room. They said that they're going to reserve enough room for 150 HD channels. That will leave them enough room for nearly 600 SD digital channels. Plenty of room to grow for the next few years at least.

Right now FiOS runs a hybrid QAM/IP service, where regular programming comes in via QAM, and things like VOD and guide data come in via IP. I just think that AT&T's decision to run twisted pair to customer's homes has been one mother of a bottle-neck. When you run fiber to the home, you have alot more room to play with. When FiOS goes full IPTV they'll still have some limitations as to how many feeds you can get to your house, but it won't be anywhere near as restrictive as what AT&T has set out for themselves.
