 Device Manager |
Well I ordered a LITE-ON Combo Drive from NewEgg to replace the DVD-ROM drive, which had it's drive tray slammed in by my leg by accident, and it is indeed a LITE-ON drive and it does work but I'm just curious as to why in Device Manager is it showing up as the brand name "ATAPI" instead of "LITE-ON" like the other drive is labeled as? Anyone know anything about this? |

| No, as I said in the original post. I was just curious if anyone knew why it was named that way. Maybe it was just a mistake? As long as it's working I'm OK but I can't help but wonder why they picked to name the drive "ATAPI" if it's a LITE-ON drive. Oh well, any other guesses? |

I sort of had a feeling someone was going to ask me about that. I didn't have the one "Other Device" showing because it wasn't necessary or related to my question. It's just my Video Controller on the motherboard. On my DELL, there's no way of turning off the integrated completely, it's either AUTO or Onboard and since I'm using a seperate card, it's on AUTO so the Onboard still shows up in there. It's disabled by the way. |

| reply to GNY So no one knows exactly why they picked this name for the drive? I'm starting to wonder if it was an accident. As long as the drive continues to work I'm OK but it does look a little weird. |

As long as the drive continues to work I'm OK but it does look a little weird. ATAPI is just a generic designation. I rather suspect that the firmware is being used/licensed for other name branded drives, so they do not use a specific "brand name". Nothing to be concerned about, that is not any indictment of the quality of the drive. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

1 edit | reply to GNY ATAPI is not the brand name. The specific manufacturer of the drive is not able to be determined, so it resorts to the generic designation.
ATAPI stands for Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface. It's an expansion of the ATA designation which, took effect, I beleive, with ATA-4 (UDMA33). More at »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT_Attachment |

Lite-On drive mechanisms are used in a great many drives, many not carrying the "Lite-On" name. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

I was just curious as to why it the strings in the firmware for the section where the brand name of the drive should be is replaced with "ATAPI". As you can see in the screenshots I provided with this particular reply the information for both drives are different but they are both LITE-ON drives. That's all, it just confused me a little. Now I'm starting to get the general idea of why it is the way it is. It's really no problem and the drive does work but I like to find out why things are the way they are sometimes. |
