Re: [connectivity] Confused about slow line speeds

There is no doubt now that when my 2200 is first turned on, it starts with a Margin (db) of between 0.5 and 1

Only after being on for awhile, when I turn it off and on again, does it sync at 3360 with a margin of > 13.

And then once it gets 3360, if left on, it can retain this speed for days. That rules out a line problem.

This is consistent over several weeks now.

What is this, a car engine in winter? Does it have to warm up before syncing at maximum speed?!?!?!

Try explaining this one to a Verizon tech.... oh lawd.......

-> Is there any way to reset a Westell 2200 other than turning it off and back on?

OK, let me try again....

When I first turn my 2200 on, it comes up with a Margin (db) of between 0.5 and 1 and a download speed of less than 1700.

Gradually (as the modem warms up???) over 10 minutes or so, as I refresh the transceiver page, the margin increases to greater than 13, sometimes going up to 15.5 or 16.

But the speed never increases. It stays at the initial low value.

But then, when I turn the modem off and on, it finally comes up with margin greater than 13.5 and speed 3360.

Question:

If the margin is increasing, why doesn't the modem increase the speed by itself? And is there a way to get it to increase the speed without turning it off and on???

No, it won't increase on it's own. Instead of turning it off, you can access the modem and drop the connection and reconnect from there. If the margins are up, it should sync at full speed.

Thanks for your reply.

But nope, didn't work. I waited until the margin came up to 15, disconnected, did a manual reconnect (or on demand, same difference). Still refused to connect at a faster speed.

Only a power off and on seems to restore 3360.

What is Verizon's modem replacement policy? I was looking in the revised TOS (got the Email) and couldn't find it.....

*** EDIT ***

Doing a Maintenance / Backup/Restore / Restore operation seems to be the most painless way to reset the modem if I'm too lazy to get up and turn it off and on. Of course I backed up the current configuration first, but I only have to do that once.

That depends on when you got the modem/router in question. The warranty used to be a year but I believe that has changed and is now either a month or three with an option to pay for extra protection.

reboot, reset, reconfigure, then recycle.

Given that he's running a 2200, he's had it a while. Verizon will sell you a new one, and if you happen to get lucky and get the right person on the phone, may give you one (good luck there). Best deal is usually E-bay. Just make sure if you get something different than a 2200, that it comes with the plug as well. They aren't interchangeable.
