Dry Loop DSL , Keep move phone number but keep dsl?

Ok, i know this has been covered but i just want to make sure i know how to do this.

I need to keep my DSL line active for work, and really dont need it to go down. I could careless about the phone not working but the wife wants to keep the phone number so we dont have to teach the kids a new phone number. (2 four year olds and a 6 year old)

Whats my options? Any?
or do i just have to let it all go dead for a few days?

I'm a little lost here.

If you are dropping your POTS line, why does anyone need to remember it at all- it won't work.

Are you going to use cell phone only, or are you going to use VOIP, and want to port your old number.

Pleasae fill in the blanks, and I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

I assume that you are planning to port your current POTS number to a different service. If so, you might try the following:

1. Order a new Direct DSL service.

2. When the new Direct DSL is activated, connect your equipment to it and than cancel the existing line share DSL service.

3. Start the porting process for your existing POTS number to your new phone service.

4. When the existing POTS number has successfully ported to your new service, cancel the existing POTS service.

EDIT: Changed the sequence for a safer ordering process.

Re: Dry Loop DSL , Keep move phone number but keep dsl?

Porting a number is supposed to automatically cancel the old service associated with that number. IFAIK, both the DSL and POTS would go bye bye immediately. Best thing to do is order dry DSL. Once it is installed and working properly, and you comfortable that everything is OK with the new service, then and not until then, port your primary phone number to the new carrier.

That should cancel the old POTS and DSL services. Lastly, contact Customer Service to verify and confirm the old service is cancelled.

I have ported two numbers, and that has not been my experience. In each case, after the port took effect, incoming calls would be sent to the new service, but the account with the original provider remained open (and billed) until I called and canceled the service. YMMV

I stand corrected. On a wire-line to wireless, there may be a duality of service. My experience has been only with wireless to wireless, in which case the old service was lost immediately.

I still recommend that the OP not start the porting process until he has satisfactory dry DSL connectivity, or he may experience an interruption of service.

If you are doing POTS to VoIP, VoIP to VoIP, or VoIP to POTS, the porting implementation gets even fuzzier. Your recommendation to hold off porting until the new Direct DSL service is active is probably a good one.
