Re: Rally Reminders... I can't wait for the rally tomorrow, do we have a rough estimate of the size it's going to be? |

 | reply to R0CKY Encouraging?????
Tonight on my commute home south on the 416, I counted no less than 6 large charter buses headed north into town. That was just in the span from 417 (Bayshore) to Fallowfield. Maybe this is normal, and I just never noticed before, but I hope it means that people are already flowing into the city for tomorrow's event. |

I don't know when the story is going to show, but according to my Slashdot account my story about this rally has been accepted (and that's new in the past few hours). So I would expect it sometime tonight. Also this is a warning to Rocky, your net neutrality site is about to get slashdotted. -- Taylor Byrnes www.taylorbyrnes.org |

 | reply to R0CKY You can park behind the Chapters on Rideau St, Right near the Parliament ... its free, but limited.
Other than that, your pretty much goint to pay big for parking ... but theres parking all over... probably 10$ atleast.
But you can park further outside downtown, and take a quick 95 bus route.. its your choice. |

 | reply to R0CKY Here's what the group is rallying for:
1 - Competition: - To stop Vertical Market leveraging - To stop/prevent a Duopoly Environment (where Cable/Telco incumbents control)
2 - Innovation: - To allow new content and applications to develop and/or flourish (ie: facebook/google)
3 - Consumer Rights: - Promote ISP transparency - Promote Consumer Privacy - Promote the need for Product delivery (get what you pay for) |

| reply to mlerner said by mlerner:There's a whole bunch of reasons there Kardinal, it's not exactly black and white. Today, yes it's totally feasible to provide a cable wholesale solution and it can be done but it's not regulated and good luck getting the CRTC to change that. Telecom providers are greedy but Rogers is worse than them all, so even if it was regulated, you bet they would not want to provide the service. In the past it would have been a challenge, the cable company networks were not very good pre-DOCSIS and they would not have been able to handle the load and again there was no regulation like there is for Bell's wholesale solution. There's probably many more reasons but that's the gist of it. I beg to differ, and I believe you are quite wrong on several points.
CRTC Telecom Decision 99-11: Application concerning access by Internet service providers to incumbent cable carriers' telecommunications facilities CRTC 2000-789: Terms and rates approved for large cable carriers' higher speed access service (first draft of costing) CRTC 2001-92: Follow-up to 2000-789 Follow up to 2000-789 and 2001-92 due to Part VII CRTC 2002-7: Issues regarding use of cable modems for third party Internet access CRTC 2006-55: Shaw Cablesystems and rates for various speeds of TPIA
There are plenty more, but this is a start. The cablecos were ordered to open their networks to competition in 1999, the same year as Bell and while Bell did it in under a year, the cablecos dragged their feet for years and have gotten away with it. Here you will find the pricing for access as well as setup costs, and how they have gone from interim to close-to-final rates (I think the final rates are yet another decision, but that's small potatoes).
It's regulated, it's been mandated from the same time as Bell, and basically nobody complains about it. It makes you wonder whether people want open networks or just love to hate the ILECs in this country. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars -- Peart/Lee/Lifeson Join Team Helix

Hopefully this will get some last minute Ottawa heads in on the rally today... they can just take an extended lunch!
Crazy storm here in Ottawa last night. Still cloudy this morning but forecast calls for them to clear this morning. Should be sunny but a little cool and windy. See you there!... |
