Re: Rally Reminders... said by tertech:said by Kardinal:Warning!! The park & ride lot in Barrhaven (on Fallowfield) is often full by 9am, all 800+ spots (it's very popular, and this is why they've expanded it twice since it opened). It's only 20 minutes by bus to downtown from there, now that the Transitway is all the way out there. If that's the case, it's easy to head a little way south on Greenbank and park in the Barrhaven Shopping Centre (Loblaw/Wal*Mart). You can catch the 95 there, and I don't think anybody's going to notice or care about a car there for ~3 hours. Lord knows, my wife parks there and has barely started shopping in 3 hrs You can also go to South Keys (south end, corner of Banks and hunt Club). I's been a while since I've been to Ottawa, but there is a terminus right at South Keys and it is very quick to get Downtown from there. Also *lot* of parking both at the terminus or the mall. |

I find that one fills up early, and the shopping mall is a bit more strict about commuter's cars parked in their lot. If it is full, there's nowhere to go from there but downtown and pay dearly for parking. Also, just to get there from any major highway is a nightmare!
Just my opinion. I think we've beaten this to death. |

1 edit | reply to R0CKY Folks, If your planning to drive to Ottawa and are not familiar with the city, print lots of Google maps, or bring your GPS. Ottawa is infamous for roads suddenly changing names. Hazeldean becomes Robertson, becomes Richmond, becomes Wellington and sure the hell looks like the same road to me. When I first moved here from TO it drove me nuts!
Whatever your plan, have a contingency; esp. if you're counting on finding a spot in a park & ride and taking the bus to Parliament Hill.
Also be aware that the buses require exact change or tickets. If the fare is $3.00 and all you have is two toonies, then you'll pay $4.00 for that trip.

 Barrhaven map |
In Barrhaven (exit the 416 at Fallowfield, exit 66), there are two park and rides. Take the 95 to downtown.
Park & Ride map of OC Transpo Strandherd Station (behind the Canadian Tire and Sobeys, across the street from Loblaws and WalMart) Fallowfield Station (OC Transpo and VIA Rail stations)
The one in Greenboro (South Keys) is reserved parking for the O-Train and is patrolled by security, but the massive box store mall next door has lots of space. Take the 97 or take the O-train to Bayview (other end of the route) and transfer to the 95 to downtown. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars -- Peart/Lee/Lifeson Join Team Helix

 | reply to R0CKY I signed up for the bus in Montreal but will not be able to go, Rocky if you can remove my name from the list (Jean-Pierre Abboud). I'm really sorry |

| Mister Rocky...
Are you telling us that you didn't succeed in securing the coveted parking spots behind parliament for us plebes even though YOU manageged to get one spot for yourself ?
Seriously: for those of us who do make it on our own without a TSI branded guide, what are the guidelines at the micro level ? (aka: where on parliament hill are we supposed to be heading ? east entrance, west entrance, middle entrance, the flame, parliament's main entrance ? Should be gather near some side door ?
Or should be all take "the tour" and in James Bond fashion, stray from the tour to reach some secret room within Parliament where we can gather and find/break the link that lets George W Bush remotely control Harper and his cronies ?
Are are you planning on having a giant 3 story high inflatable beaver which will act as a very obvious meeting place ? (make sure the beaver is oriented so it appears to be looking at Harper's offices |

 | reply to R0CKY id suggest you all meet at the flame. no room for confusion east entrance west this and whatnot |

Rideau Centre parking | Downtown parking | Metcalfe exit off Queensway (417) |
For those driving, here are a few ideas for parking (if you can't find anything on the street, which is hit-and-miss):
Rideau Centre: large downtown mall with Westin hotel and Congress Centre attached to it. There are two parking structures available (one above, one below ground. The easiest way to access them is on the first map. Exit at Nicholas St and follow the dots. You can stop in the food court if you are hungry, then exit the mall at the Elephant and Castle (take the escalators up from the food court and you are there), then walk west on Rideau St (turns to Wellington as you cross the Canal) and up to the Hill.
For downtown parking, your best bet is to take Metcalfe St. Don't be put off by having to dogsleg around the castle-like Victoria Memorial building (National Museum of Nature) though; it's quite simple and the traffic flows that way quite easily. Downtown parking are numbered as follows:
1) World Exchange Plaza: the entrance ramp will be in front of you at the lights for Metcalfe/Albert. Pretty much the standard rates for most of downtown, there are always spots if you go down 4 or 5 levels, and there is a food court on the 2nd floor of the mall if you are hungry. 2) National Arts Centre: there are two entrances, one off Elgin St and one off Albert St. 3) Clarica Centre (across from the CBC Broadcast Centre) -- this one tends to fill pretty quickly. 4) 240 Sparks St - office building with mall at ground level (this is where the passport office is, if you need one) 5) Large parking lot on Metcalfe St that often has spots. Place Bell Canada is the next block north and has a large multi-story parking garage too. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars -- Peart/Lee/Lifeson Join Team Helix

1 edit | There are 2 park&rides in Kanata just off the 417 ...
The "Eagleson" (at Eagleson Rd/March Rd) park&ride is usually overflowing on both sides.
You'll usually have better luck at the "Terry Fox" park&ride which is accessible THROUGH the shopping centre. Take Terry Fox Northbound and the first RIGHT into the shopping centre. Then take the first right in the ridiculous parking lot and follow that around and eventually you'll head between the AMC cinemas and the 417 ... the P&R is in there behind the AMC.
Downtown, the World Exchange Plaza parking is probably the cheapest if there's space. |
