| [VA] Intermittent Internet Issues???
I support a number of home networks in the Fairfax area. Seems something has changed on the network in the past 30 days or so.
Symptoms are service hanging, need to reboot the modem typically at least once daily. Xbox server connection issues as well. All users are linked to Merrifield as far as I know.
All users have Toshiba modems if this makes a difference. Not sure but I think they are PCX2200??
Seems like others in the area may be seeing some unusual problems as well based upon a quick glance at some posts?
Was there a Cox network upgrade in the past 30-45 days or so?
Any comments would be insightful.
Thanks,

| Appreciate the response, however, I confirmed that they are all Toshiba PCX 2600 modems, which appear on the "approved" list.
It is very interesting that the problems appear to have started about the same time for all users.
Again, curious if anyone else is seeing similar problems in Fairfax County with the Toshiba PCX 2600 needing almost daily restart and problems with XBox Live connections.

@cox.net | reply to jfoj I'm noticing some of the same issues as well lately, and I also have a PCX2600 and am near the Burke area. |

| This is what I was curious about, seemed way to strange that these users symtoms appeared about the same time and had simiar behavoir.
In the end, the quickest solution may be replace the modem with a Motorola or Webstar, however, I am not convinced the modems are the issue, but something on the headend side changed??
Just my thoughts.
Anyone else??

| reply to jfoj The last time I had modem issues this bad was when Cox made a system change and no longer supported my old modem a couple of years ago. It acted much the same way--I frequently lost connection and had to reset. I then switched to the PCX2600 once I realized the modem was the issue. My gut reaction is that it may be time to switch modems again. Anyone have suggestions for an upgrade if that turns out to be the issue? |

I'll be happy to look at your issue if you could PM me your cable modem MAC address. |

| reply to daveinpoway said by daveinpoway :The Motorola SB51XX modems have been solid and reliable. Same here. However, my modem logs are showing a rather frequent switching of upstream channel frequencies - something that rarely occurred in the past. I am located about 3 miles from the Merrifield center, so assume thats my head end. I am not seeing any unusual problems lately. -- "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler."- Albert Einstein |

| reply to jfoj I also noticed some changes in the past 30 days or so. I now can NOT directly connect two hosts in COX network. I am also in Fairfax area. What I meant was I had servers setup in my house and my brother's house, I used to be able to ssh back and forth. Now, I can only do that from office. ssh to one from the other stopped working. |

| luccons,
What modem(s) are you running??
Toshiba or Motorola?
I assume jsimmons has a Motorola??
Seems that my Toshiba's are having quite a few T3 timeouts. May need to change to a Motorola to see if things get any better.

| I am running Motorola in both houses.
My problem is not timeout, I guess COX changed the routing rules on their router. So you cannot make direct connection to another COX user (like http, ssh, ftp etc). This may be their strategy to protect SOHO? Not sure |

| reply to jfoj My drop problems have persisted all week. Some days have been better than others, but I still am getting knocked offline periodically and the PCX2600 modem will not reconnect without a manual powerdown reset. I'm going to give the Motorola SB5101 a try and see if I get the same problems. I'll post again if I see any similar problems immediately, otherwise, I will test it out for another week or so and post if everything is working. |

| Tenkuma,
Seems like you have same symptoms as my users are seeing.
Could be the modems, however, looks like a few users are seeing similar behavior??
Wondering if the Toshiba's are less tolerant to issues on the network vs. the Motorola?
I will put a Motorola on one user and query the levels if I get a chance. May not even run traffic through it initially??
Another forum member put together a good tool that could capture levels over time and graph them for a number of different modems about a year ago (just will not work with Toshiba!). Not sure if he still has this info posted somewhere on DSLR? I think I may still have info somewhere around the house on this??

@cox.net | reply to jfoj I'm seeing this, too: approximately a daily loss of connectivity requiring a power-off/on of the modem to resolve.
Toshiba PCX2600 in Fairfax/Burke. |

| reply to jfoj I just chatted with a Cox support rep who reported that my signal levels were fine at the moment (an hour after I reset the modem). I asked to have access to the Toshiba's diagnostics and was denied. I am left with calling them when it drops again. |

| reply to jfoj I have been having problems since Friday with my Linksys BEFCMU10 v2 modem. It was intermittent on Friday before completely going out. It's been out now since then.
We've had a cox tech come by and check everything, but they gave the all clear. I talked online to support and they said that there has been a problem with some internet users in NOVA but there is no timetable on when it will be fixed (thanks a bunch lol).
I know the BEFCMU10 v2 is no longer on the compatibility list, but is that the problem? There's still a BEFCMU10 v2 troubleshooting article on the Cox Site. When I check the modem status the Downstream/Upstream never "Locks" (always shows as "In Progress") and the Downstream Power is extremely low (-57). Is this issue on Cox's end? Thanks for your help |
