if you have something in the box with a CD key your best route would be to install Steam first and enter your CD key through that...especially if you have reservations about a vista install...

that way you know you are not only going to be compatible but you will be fully updated as well...

There's no doubt there will be at least a couple of updates, but most of the smaller updates will be rolled-up into a larger package.
