| [DW7000] Hughesnet Replacement with Mobile Broadband
note to Mod: I beg your indulgance with this topic. Maybe there is a ray of hope for us Hughesnet sufferers?
My hope is that there are more and more people trying the "Mobile Broadband" type services from Sprint or Verizon, etc. Seems like most people have at least cell coverage at their house.
So my questions are: how do you like the service and will you pull the plug on HN soon? I have Sprint service in my area, at least according to the coverage map, but I don't know anybody who has the service. And I don't have a local store where I can just plug in an aircard and see how well it works. Won't take much to beat HN, tho...
Anybody here use mobile broadband?

| I tried the Sprint wireless. I was in their coverage area, but it still didn't work. It was actually slower than dial-up.
Believe me, I'm waiting anxiously to dump this stupid satellite. I have been on it for ten years. I'm looking over the news and calling people to see just when the local cell tower is going to be carrying internet info, and not just roaming phone calls.
Be patient. We should be on the verge of new things soon. |

I picked up a Razr V3m to check out EvDO on my Alltel account. I had it enabled for about 1.5 months. It did work, but I'm not in the strongest signal area. A couple nights, when Hughes quit, I was able to browse. The browsing was a bit slow. Kind of like dial up. Uploads were wosre. Even though the data coming in was not terrrible, your wireless devise (cell phone in my case) still needs to push its siganl back to the tower. In my case, it was not a feasible replacement for my Hughesnet service.
I took my phone and laptop to a place where I had a very good signal and played for about 1/2 hour or so. If it worked that well from here at home, I'd dump my Hughesnet service. Due to the weaker cell signal here at home, I still stuck with satellite internet.
DSL is coming soon, so I can/will have to live with Hughes for a few months more.

I have Hughes, iDirect, and Sprint Broadband. In general, I'm finding the Sprint coverage charts to be fairly dependable. Where they show Orange I get EVDO that is always better than Hughes, and while never as fast as my iDirect it is better for VPN, secure sites, etc. Uploads from 100 to 800, and downloads from 600 to 1250. Interestingly (at least to me), in the places where I have the highest downloads I see the lowest uploads; 125/1250, for example, when I've also seen 800/800.
Outside the Orange, in the Green areas, it is significantly worse than I ever see on Hughes if not FAPped. In grey areas it is essentially not there at all.
The map shows Orange radiating out from Ridgecrest covering the general InyoKern area. The problem is that they show some spots of grey there. Looking at topo maps for the area I'm not sure what is causing them. Looks like grey in Inyokern proper, and north along Brown road to Leliter road. Sort of along the west China Lake boundary.

Yeah dbirdman, I'm close to the edge of coverage - near Leliter. There is a cell tower not too far away, but I think the problem is lots of elevation changes and hills and holes that shade some areas around here.
Sure sounds like it may be worth a try at least.

I was in the Verizon Broadband coverage area and we have a local store.
I'm trying the $59.99/month 5GB allowed service. I get one to two bars, but the service is very slow. Even by HN standards:

| What card did you get? Does it show values for 1xRTT and also for EVDO? Those speeds would indicate you are only getting a 1x signal. If you take it outside, do you do better? Worth finding out if you can get true EVDO with an antenna and/or booster.

| It is the USB727. It does have a jack for external ant.
I'll see if I can boost the sig with another antenna, or borrow my wife's laptop and go up on the roof.

Actually, my reply was pretty blank.
I had one or two bars at best on my Sprint mobile usb thingie. And I was using from within my rv. So take my previous post with that in mind. Although I see others saying similar things.
Damn, this directway/hughes system is really sucking these days. I just have to find an alternative. |

| Interesting that you can't get EVDO in Coquille - shows a nice Orange on the map. But the nature of all wireless is that it can be capricious. I'm currently in Brookings (actually Harbor) and it is a true 1X area; I get 96K with 400ms pings.
Same thing up in North Bend at the Casino (actually somewhat worse).
However a month ago I spent 3 days at Bullard's Beach State Park, in a Green area down the Coquille, and I had a nice 1100K EVDO signal. Good thing, because I was blocked for satellite by trees in all directions!

I switched from Hughes to Sprint last fall, and I couldn't be happier. I use a Sierra datacard in a linksys router. I consistently get 1200+ down and 200-300 up.
Sprint has apparently decided to cap monthly at 5 GB per month, but it's unclear as to how this will be implemented and whether or not it will affect the plan I'm on. While that cap would piss me off if I'm hit with it, I still find my current configuration much better than Hughes.
