[TWC] time warner and speedtest using a mac

i was wondering why i get slow upload speed. My download speed is fine average 13.6 Mbps but my upload average speed is 450 kbps. I currently live in HI and am using the oceanic time warner speed test. My upload speed averages on my pc 1 Mbps. When i use my mac (op x 10.5)...i get the slower upload speed. when i use speakeasy.net speed test...i get close to speeds that im currently use to seeing. Why do i get different readings from different speed test. I thought my settings were wrong but after getting close to 1Mbps from speakeasy i feel that its the oceanic speed test thats reading different. Any ideas? Im currently plugged through my modem directly.

Your getting different speeds because of the distance, Try testing to a LA site and see what you get.

The farther your data goes, the more devices it has to go though, and the slower it goes.

Distance? Errr....Mililani is where Oceanic TW is located. The speed test is right where he lives.

You lucky dog...I'm envious. I'm wondering if Oceanic is EVER going to offer 15mbps on the Big Island.

I bet the problem is something to do with your MAC and the VisualWare speed test as you said you get the 1mbps up on your PC, right?

Download MySpeedPC (free version) from Visualware. It is exactly the same test as Oceanic's. Use the San Jose server. I get 1mbps upload speed there but I have a PC not a MAC.. Or, you can do the same test on the web instead of downloading MySpeed. If you do it on the web, try both the San Jose and LosAngeles tests. On the LA test, I get better download speed than on the San Jose one but only get about 500kbps up. The LA test is run by someone who offered their server to Visualware so I think the SanJose one is more accurate as it is under the direct control of Visualware. There is a ton of information at Visualware's test site if you are having a problem so explore all that information.

If you download MySpeedPC you are eligble for tech support even if you have the free version. So, you could request support and ask about the upload speed on your MAC. The tech person I have dealt with in London is great and he helped me when I had the free version and has really gone out of his way to analyze my connection in depth since I bought MySpeed Advanced version.

»myspeed.visualware.com/
»www.myspeed.com/pe/lite.html

Also, test at Web100 SantaCruz. I get full upload speed at this test also. It is quite similar to VisualWare's test. Visualware and Web100 tests are the best tests for accuracy and the huge amount of information given.

Oh, one other thing, if you download MySpeed, when you test don't do the HTTP test. Do the socket to socket. It is more accurate.

I can't cite the source, but I recall reading somewhere that Oceanic caps the upload speed in busy nodes. This is to protect the overall integrity of the node.

But after reading your post, it sounds like your Mac is mis configured somehow. If your able to get close to 1Mbps on your PC, but not your Mac it sounds like the latter is the case.

thanks for the local support! I downloaded the speed test lite version (selected socket test)and reports that my speeds are up to where it should be. The download speed was par but my upload speed reported on an average of 975 kbps. The program though is a ms-dos program so the native mac operating system can't run it. The beauty of the mac though is I run vm fusion which lets me run windows operating system and macs operating system on the same computer and at the same time. I have come to a conclusion that the oceanic version of speed test for some reason is giving me a false reading on the upload side. When i do the oceanic test, my downloads are fine my uploads are half the speed but its reports the quality of service is somewhere at 93%. I guess it's just one of those things. Thanks again!
