Speakeasy DSL test gives extra fast results

When I do a DSL test at Speakeasy, and several other test sites, on the indicator there is a needle and below that there is a ball and as they move during the download part they really jerk and hesitate a lot and sometimes I get speed results double of what I should. I know this is impossible. I did the BellSouth test but they don't show what is going on during the test. Anyone got an idea what it is causing this?

Unless you really know how the calculations are done and what timings are used in thee things, you can't say much about their reliability. However, when clearly impossible results are obtained, you should stop trusting that test no matter what it says on other occasions.

You could always try the AT&T Yahoo! speedtest...

»helpme.att.net/dsl/speedtest/ is the link to it, and you can select which server to test to... In your case, probably either Ohio, Virginia, or Miami, FL.

I get consistently good results with Speakeasy, but they are never out of reason. I just ran Speakeasy, Speedtest, and the above mentioned ATT test. Speakeasy and Speedtest both came in at 3Mbs, while AT&T was 1.5 Mbs. I am signed up for 3 Mbs service, currently running a sync rate of 5024 interleaved, according to my modem.

I happen to have a little network monitor applet that graphs input and output data rates. When I test against Speakeasy's closest node, the applet consistently shows a smooth even data flow at higher rates that most of the other test sites, so I tend to believe that Speakeasy's servers aren't overloaded and may be capable of delivering more accurate rates that the other sites, most of the time.

I have a very reliable 6.0 connection with good stats.

My Speakeasy and Speedtest.net tests over the last year always come in around 6475 down and 434 up.

Both the AT&T/BellSoutheast speed test results, and the AT&T/Yahoo results always come in around 4500 down and 400 up.

Nobody has ever been able to give me a reason why the AT&T/BellSouth or AT&T/Yahoo results are always much lower.

Is this an AT&T systemic problem, or are Speakeasy and Speedtest.net over stating the results??

The jerking and hesitating you note while using Speakeasy is the result of pauses/latency in the line. I don't have any proof of this, of course, but back when we were a BellSouth customer, they would always recommend using Speakeasy for speedtests, rather than FastAccess. I suspect this is because there are some shared lines between the Speakeasy/BellSouth/AT&T servers, and that would explain the good results.

I don't know what method Speakeasy uses to calculate upload/download, but I'm suspicious of the exceptionally good and consistent results. IMO, the most accurate tests -- and most comprehensive -- are at myvoipspeed.visualware.com

BTW, Speedtest.net uses a different method of calculating results that ONLY has relevance as a comparative tool for tests on their website. Trying to compare results from their site against other sites, for the most part, is like apples and oranges. The differences are subtle, but still relevant.

With your suggested program, using the socket selection, the speed is almost non-existant.

With the HTTP, the Illinois server is close to my 3Mb down and ok for the upstream.

Trying the other server choices, the speed is about half or less than it should be..

Using Motorola/Netopia 2210

I tried myvoipspeed.visualware.com and received results that seem to be accurate, and the site certainly provided much more backup info.

Results were: 5978 down and 438 up.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Speakeasy DSL test gives extra fast results UPDATE!

I went around the corner to a friends house that has the same service that I have and his tests at Speakeasy was doing the same jerking and hesitating as mine. Tomorrow I will check on another friend on the same block I live on. I'm beginning to believe that the Speakeasy tests are OK and the problem is in the lines in my area.

It is totally normal for see results like that when running the speed tests at Speakeasy. You would see that at other speed test sites if they had a little red moving ball. I like the Speakeasy speed tests and use them all the time because they work well. It jerks ever time I have ran a test at home and ever time I have ran a test anywhere else. Sometimes late at night, when decent folks would be in bed, I will run a test and it will be very smooth.

It is like that because the Internet sucks.

The Internet is not a well designed homogeneous system.

It is just a hodgepodge of forty eleven million mismatched networks thrown together and interconnected with strings and tin cans.

The Internet is the ultimate Rube Goldberg machine. »Way to much free time
