| My passport recently expired. The instructions to get it renewed by mail only list a method to obtain a passport card which will be used in conjunction with a passport book:
»travel.state.gov/passport/get/re···833.html
Unless you are traveling abroad within 2 weeks the only way to apply is by mail. Unless I am missing something, we are all going to get cards eventually, not just for drive across borders. |

Hmmm....the wife and one child just renewed their passports, and went to the post office for real passports. BTW, received them in a week.
I travel to Mexico regularly on business (Matamoros and Valle Hermosa) and have only had to use my passport when travelling on business in Mexico on the Mexican side (requirement for doing business in Mexico). I have never even been asked to show it upon entering the US. Go figure |

| reply to mikenolan7 The passport card is not used in conjunction with the passport. It is entirely different. It is intended for use only for travel to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. The application is the same but you must choose either a card or a passport. The fee is different. The card cannot be used for air travel. It is intended primarily for people like me who cross the Mexico/ Canadian border on a regular basis either by foot or car. I only live 10 miles from Mexico. -- 9000 spaceway III, 7000S SatMex 5 1270, Dlink wirless |

| reply to Cudni I understand that it will be easier to have one of those cards for North American travel, but hell, can a national ID card be far behind? -- Life is simply one damned thing after another. |

| Has nothing to do with an National ID. The whole purpose is to elimate someone from having to carry their Passport, when working in Canada, Mexico during the day, and for Tourists that may travel to those areas, along with other Tourist meccas.
Easier to swipe a ID, then having to pull out a Passport, and thumbing for the right place, or having to look at a worn out Passport book. |

I wonder what impact, if any, it will have on the Mexican side or the border work wise. That has been the only place I have ever needed/used my passport....for their paperwork. I've never had to use it for entry back into the US. |

Seems like this is more of a convenience thing for people who travel to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. |

Only 10% of the card readers being used by authorized agents, however. |

| reply to Cudni Do they have a place on the card to punch your carbon credits ?
Every adult in Britain should be forced to carry 'carbon ration cards', say MPs Last updated at 1:08 AM on 27th May 2008
Every adult should be forced to use a 'carbon ration card' when they pay for petrol, airline tickets or household energy, MPs say.
The influential Environmental Audit Committee says a personal carbon trading scheme is the best and fairest way of cutting Britain's CO2 emissions without penalising the poor.
Under the scheme, everyone would be given an annual carbon allowance to use when buying oil, gas, electricity and flights.
HOW THE SCHEME WOULD WORK
Every adult in the UK would be given an annual carbon dioxide allowance in kgs and a special carbon card.
The scheme would cover road fuel, flights and energy bills.
Every time someone paid for road fuel, flights or energy, their carbon account would be docked.
A litre of petrol would use up 2.3kg in carbon, while every 1.3 miles of airline flight would use another 1kg.
When paying for petrol, the card would need to swiped at the till. It would be a legal offence to buy petrol without using a card.
When paying online, or by direct debit, the carbon account would be debited directly.
Anyone who doesn't use up their credits in a year can sell them to someone who wants more credits. Trading would be done through specialist companies. -- Gladiator Security Forum »www.gladiator-antivirus.com/ * A fun/friendly/informative forum for the mature elder crowd »www.theover50goldengroup.net

I have no doubts that 100% of the criminally-oriented who have them will use them, so that should help balance things out. |
