Just gave in and switched from DSL to FIOS

Since the fastest speed Verizon was able to give me on my mediocre phone line was 1.2MB, I gave in and ordered FIOS. I hope I'm happy with the decision. I was going to switch to Cable.

Good luck with FiOS! Hope you're enjoying it.

I won't have it until Friday. I ordered it this morning after finally finding out why my crappy DSL service was never upgraded to 3MB from 756K. I was stuck at 1.2MB. 7 calls to tech support couldn't get me an answer, but 1 post in the Verizon Direct Forum gave me a detailed answer to what the problem was. Kudos to the people over there.

I don't understand why you make this sound like a compromise LOL...you're not "giving in", you're entering the 21st century. There are a gazillion of us who would almost give our "left one" to have FiOS available!

I hear what your saying. There are several things that I am worried about... Possible burying of cable. Screwing up my home network. My copper phone lines being removed. What this installation will look like inside and outside my house. etc.

If you're in an area with underground utilities, the cable will likely be buried prior to the install date, and you'll notice the fiber lying around in a loop near your existing NID, so it won't be much of an eyesore. As to the ONT, you probably can request to have it put inside the house (basement), although that makes servicing a pain. About the removal of copper, go do yourself a favour and buy a UPS. That'll not only give you voice, but also data service during a power outage.
Keep us posted on the installation and how it goes, and congrats on finally entering the 21st century! Man, I'm still posting this on a 768 Kbit DSL connection, so you probably know how I feel right now... =/

Well, it's already a disaster. Verizon deactivated my DSL account including all my email and sub-accounts, 4 days early. I'm getting mixed responses whether or not I'll ever get my email accounts back. Words can't describe how much I hate Verizon right now.

Verizon Direct comes through again. No less than 6 people told me on the phone that my best case scenario was that my email accounts would be back on Friday. 1 Post in the Verizon Direct Forum, and my account is back online. I had tech support, billing, and several supervisors tell me on the phone that there was absolutely nothing they could do to help me.

Thanks again to the terrific people over there.

Man! That should never have happened. When I switched from DSL to FiOS, All my accounts stayed as they were. I had DSL connectivity, literally, until the FiOS install tech switched my in-house wiring from the old Copper line coming in and connected it to the ONT. My internet and phone were only down about an hour and a half.

Almost as soon as the ONT was activated, I had phone and internet and there were no other connection problems at all. It took about another two hours to get FiOS-TV running but that was a V* set top box activation server problem and not any other issue.

All my email accounts were there and accessible as if nothing had changed (except for going from 3 mb/s to 15 mb/s).

Hope you get to some CSR that knows what the heck is going on and he/she can rescue your DSL (until Fri) and keep you from losing your V* accounts.

Postmortem: Glad the crew in V* Direct could help. I meant to suggest that route in my post.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at FiOS service. Not only are you not at the whim of unpredictable DSL speed hiccups (I almost always test at 14.5/1.9 mb/s on my 15/2 connection) but my phone service is much quieter than it was on Copper.

I was basically on the phone from 11AM this morning until 3PM this afternoon. NOBODY would/could help me. They said: "it was impossible" to get my account back online before Friday. I spoke to FIOS and DSL customer service and billing departments. I also spoke to 2 supervisors, including 1 who couldn't guarantee that my accounts would even be able to be retrieved since it was canceled in advance. The fact that 1 post in the Verzion Direct Forum got my account back online proves that everyone I spoke to was full of s**t.

What else do you expect from "Bob" or "Joseph" on the other end? It's one of the occupational hazards of outsourcing...
BTW, the Direct forum won't be around for long either, I heard it's being moved overseas as well, so this may very well be the last time you actually get to use their outstanding service.

My FiOS installation just ended. It went pretty uneventful except for the fact we couldn't find my telephone box. I've only owned the house for 6 months, and had no idea where it was. The tech and I followed the line into my drop ceiling in my basement. By mostly luck, I cut out one of the tiles in the ceiling, and it was within 6 inches of the box. So now I have to repair my ceiling. No big deal. I had all the equipment installed in my basement, and the router installed in my 2nd floor office. The tech did an excellent, clean job running the fiber from the pole to my house. Total install took about 4 hours, including the tech having to go back to the main office for some reason. I just ran my first speed test, and it was 18.4MB down/ 4.6MB up. So far so good. I'm currently using the Verizon router, and it seems to be working well.

...after a little tweaking:

Considering I'm going from 768/128 DSL, I'm in a different world right now even with the 5MB upload. I had RoadRunner in the past, and this blows it away.
