I agree it is mostly speculators. Demand has gone down in the US. Here in Boston more people are taking public transit we're actually on record for the highest ridership numbers ever. I carpool to work because I work outside the city, and gas is always a different price on the way home than it was on the way there. Thank goodness I only drive to and from work 2 or 3 times a week. The rest is carpooling and the weekends I only take the T.
If it is indeed speculators, they will eventually get bitten. Like any other system, there has to be a balance. You can only drive oil up so much before it will reach a tipping point and there will be a correction. I'm quite sure the days of $1 gas are gone, and possibly even $2 gas, but it should go down once things smooth out. However, if there is any kink in the supply chain, such as a refinery going down, you will surely see a spike by the speculators which will still balance out in the end. I hope we learn from this and try to become more energy independent otherwise this will just keep happening. |
