Unable use router with Brighthouse/Earthlink.

I'm cursed, or it seems that way.
I added a wired router(Linksys) at home and unlike everyone else I know, after going through the correct automated setup, no joy.

Eventually I figured out how to manually create routing tables and got it working. It worked acceptably for several years.

I bought a new wireless router (Netgear) and went through its automated setup, again, no joy.

Wasn't able to update the routing tables in this one so I ended up using it as a hub. Suddenly in the last month the Linksys completely stopped working.

That's the history. (Yes, direct connecting to the PC works.)

I can ping out. But the router never gets an IP assigned to it. Can't ping the DNS server or the Default Gateway that the PC connect gives.

Did notice that when you first connect with the PC, it shows an IP address and Subnet Mask of 255.255.0.0 then switches to the "normal" IP and subnet 255.255.248.0

I can't set the router to the PC's IP, even if I wanted to.

Any idea of what's going on and if anything can be done about it?
(btw, my neighbor's have the same ISP service and use a router, no problems.)

Have you cloned the MAC address from your computer to the router? That MAC address is the one that the modem is looking for to connect with. Once that is done things should work with little problem.

Try the following:

1) Reset the router to factory defaults (see the instruction manual).

2) Turn off the PC.

3) Remove AC power from the cable modem and the router for at least 5 minutes (30 would be better).

4) Apply power to the modem and allow it to sync up.

5) Apply power to the router and let it sync.

6) Start up the PC.

Yes, That was done automaticly by the router's configuration software.

I can retry leaving the modem off for 30 minutes. I don't have high hopes for it.

Thanks for the suggestions, though I was hoping for less "general" ones.

The above and more tests completed.
My neighbor who has Brighthouse/Roadrunner was able to get my router to work. So it is not a router issue.

I've tried the router's MAC, cloning my PC's MAC, a MAC from a PC I got rid of some time ago. All to no avail.

The router is not being assigned an IP by the ISP's DHCP.

Any help out there?
How is Earthlink detecting that I have a router?
Why is the PC assigned an IP but not the router?

Tested the idea that the router's IP may be conflicting with the Earthlink router's IP.
Nope, switched to 192.168.10.1, no luv.
Looks like I will need to change ISPs.

The first thing you need to find out is if the modem is in bridge mode. If not call earthlink and find out how to get it in bridge mode.
Shut down your computer, disconnect power to the router, disconnect power to the modem. Wait at least 2 hours.
Connect power to the modem first.Wait until all lights get stable. Next connect power to the router. Wait until it is up and running. Then start your computer. This should get you connected.
As a side note if you could include the modem model number and the router model number, I(we) might be able to help with better answers. G/L

Ok, I am about at the end of my suggestions. Since you can connect to the internet when the modem is directly connected to the PC, I think you need to check in the linksys forum for router connection help.

»Linksys

One other thing you might check out is the modem. The 1100 is an older model and may not be functioning properly. Mine is a PCX2300 and I have had it for about 3 yrs. Just take you 1100 to a Time Warner service center and ask to trade it in for a newer model. Should be a no-charge trade.
The new models will vary according to location and availability.

The old modem was the answer. Swapped with a newer one and everything works.
THANKS!

After you mentioned it, I remembered that it even came with a driver disk. In fact, I had to "hack" the USB driver (back in the day) when I was using IP Sharing and needed the USB connection to the modem so I could use the net card to connect to the other computer.
There is no way to load a driver into the router.

Cool. I'm glad you got it fixed. What modem did they give you?

They exchanged it for a Toshiba DAZ8821F.
