Can I buy a modem at the store?

I have an ancient Speedstream 5xxx modem (not sure the model). It won't last forever. When it dies, is there a modem I can buy at a store (Staples, Frys, etc.) that will work... instead of waiting for ATT to ship me one.

By the way, what modem is being used now? (In Northern California)

Thanks,
Al

I replaced mine with a D-Link that I couldn't be happier with. Here's are some from Newegg.

DSL-2320B

DSL-2540B

I got the 2320b because I like to keep my home networking separate from the modem. And use the modem in bridge mode so I can still have my router take care of the log-in process.

So, there's a few more options for you. You'll need to do what works best for you since I've discovered this is a very personal thing.

Interesting that you like this modem because many of the reviews say they can't get it to work with ATT... and this is an ATT forum.

I like the idea of all-in-one so perhaps I'll order one and give it a try and see what happens.

Thanks for the post.

This is a little late but Best Buy sells an ATT/Yahoo DSL DSL modem package from 2Wire for about $85.

I replaced my speed streem last year with a Zoom X6. It is a combination modem/wifi router. I have been very pleased and have had fewer problem than with the speed stream
