Switching from Bell: Will Speedstream Modem work w/ new ISP?

I'm considering leaving Bell Sympatico but i still have the modem they provided me. It is a Speedstream 6520 DSL Modem/Router (Wireless). Logging in to the gateway admin page (192.167.2.1) shows a custom Bell Sympatico screen.

My question: If i switch service to TekSavvy or one of the other non-Bell/Rogers providers can i still use this Speedstream DSL modem provided to me from Bell with these other ISPs, or must i purchase that new ISPs modem before service will work? What is the norm?

Thanks

You will need to return the modem to Bell as it is not your property. Technically, it should work fine with any DSL provider that uses PPPoE authentication.

They will charge you $100 if you keep it I believe.
You're better off with a $50 speedtouch 516
or a used 2wire.

They may charge you $100. Of the three accounts I switched to TekSavvy this year Bell sent me return stickers for only two. I have been waiting for the third set of stickers since January. So far they have not charged me for that modem.

The modem sits on a shelf in my basement waiting for the stickers. Somehow I suspect it will stay there for a long, long time

I agree. The refurb'd 2Wires are an especially good deal. Far better than the SS6520.

You may have to reprogram the ATM virtual circuit, settings are ISP dependent

Ebay has Speedstream modems for $20-23. One seller is in Quebec. The other in Oakville. It sounds better than paying $99 for a speedtouch 519.
