Before anyone responds to xvxmattxvx's question, here are the comments he posted on YouTube concerning the raw footage.

Wah wah wah, Pirates of the Caribbean is downloading at 30kbs! Maybe I should go to the store and buy it instead of stealing.

Yes, I did remember to compress the audio. In fact, I usually compress the audio for my YouTube videos in the mp3 format at 44.1KHz 160kbps CBR just to improve the sound quality a little bit. For the BitTorrent distribution however, I'll use a much higher bitrate so that people have some maneuvering room.

I'll work on the 2-pass encoding this weekend. I've never been able to get it work properly using the original XviD codec, but I'll try out the ffdshow filters instead. They seem to give me much more flexibility, but I'm not sure about the performance.

Thanks!

Re: LIVE from Ottawa - Net Neutrality Rally on Parliament Hill

You probably should use the 2 pass option in Xvid. The first pass lets the encoder build a profile of the entire video and the 2nd pass is where it figure out how to distribute the data rate so that more space is allocated where it is needed most.

Remember to compress the audio too, eh?

FYI

Just thought I'd share my MP's response to a letter I sent.

Mike Wallace MP Burlington,Ont.

At least there is some awareness now.
----------------------------------------

Thank you for your e-mail regarding net neutrality and Mr. Angus’ (NDP-Timmins-James Bay, Ont.) Bill.

It certainly has become an issue in the last couple of months, which is why the CRTC has decided to investigate it. I look forward to their report as we move forward on this issue.

With regards to Mr. Angus’ Private Members’ Bill (PMB), I am not yet familiar with it. The introduction of a PMB at First Reading only allows for the Bill to be printed by the Crown. Following that, the process is based on a random draw conducted by the Speaker at the opening of the 39th Parliament, which is called the List of Consideration of Private Members’ Business. The House generally gets through approximately 30 PMBs per session (we are currently in the 2nd Session of the 39th Parliament). Since January of 2006, the House has dealt with around 70 PMBs. On the List, Mr. Angus is at 183. I do not anticipant the House to come anywhere near number 183 before the next election. At that time, the whole process is reset all over again.

Members often use the PMB process to get their name in the media regarding a popular issue, knowing that their Bill will never come up for debate. A good example of this is Mr. Martin (NDP-Winnipeg Centre, Man.) and his PMB to get rid of the penny. Another example of one would be Mr. Stoffer (NDP-Sackville-Eastern Shore, N.S.), who is number 114 on the list. He may in fact find his spot come up for consideration, but will have to choose only one of the 35 PMBs that he has tabled.

Once again, thank you for sharing your views on this, I will keep them in mind. If you any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Mike Wallace

Sharpshark,

You may be interested that the single most viewed photo in Flickr is of you pleasuring blowing inflating Godzilla. You can't see much from the angle of the shot, but the expression on Guspaz face says it all.
LOL .... we were joking to each other when he was "blowing" up the legs(?). It looked like it should have been rated R from where we were standing.

I think you're on to something... It's the outlandish displays that draw attention, then you give them your message. If there's a 'next time' you really should give Godz' a sign to hold.

I tend to agree with Flannel. Using P2P would be a good thing in principle.

However, YouTube has more exposure.

Also, you can have longer videos: you break it up into 9:50 chunks and name them part 1 of x, part 2 of x etc.
Why not both Youtube and Bittorrent?

Actually, the more I think about it, the more this is a democratic media issue. If milnoc or chromiumdr want to publish their documentary material about the Net Neutrality rally via BT or any other form of peer to peer, user to user, medium and Bell throttles it, they are effectively discriminating against it (while favoring their own media).

Perhaps this issue and P2P could be properly explained to the general public using this very example of Bell's anti-free speech casualties due to their business practices. I can imagine headlines could potentially be effective, like, oh I don't know: Bell hinders the distribution of public protest material criticizing BCE. (uh... let's not forget Rogers and Primus)

I also have over 500MB of footage I'd like to get uploaded too. Didn't have much luck the other night.

Torrent? Youtube? Rapidshare? MegaUpload? All of the above?
I fear if I uploaded that much to here I'd kill the forums

I found a few more rally photos on Flickr from others.

Use a search for "Net Neutrality" Ottawa. Or just this link...

After the first few, skip to page 5 to get past all mine that begin IMGP0xxx

note: user named acroll has quite a few excellent shots! Are you here dude?

if you want i could take a crack at reducing the size. I have somt video compression tools. Just head over to filefront upload it there and send me the link i will see what i can do with it. I am pretty sure 160 will fit as i onetime uploaded a 80 meg zip file.

yeah there is a time limit for uploads. So if you can transfer the file to a shell with a fast upload you should be able to post it here.

You should see if you can put it up on here as a larger file... What's the limit here? Anyone know?
I don't think we have an upload limit in size. I think it depends on connection speed.
You might not have one at the app level, but you might have a limit on the size of a HTTP POST payload, either intentionally or through something broken in Apache, mod_perl, etc.

I still can't picture you getting it down to 160K and still having any quality left.

160M maybe.

160K????
I'm still working on the size issue.

EDIT: D'OH! Sorry! I meant 160 MEGS! Not 160K!

Still, 160 megs is unusually big for a 960x540 10 minute video. But I'm still learning how to use the XviD encoder.
