the rally only just started and you're calling it a failure? Do you have a vested interest in seeing that occur maybe?
Not at all. I'm only comparing the number of people there versus what Rocky has defined as a success.

However, in the end, the real definition of success will be when the Government defines policies or laws for Net Neutrality, no matter how many protests occur.

Until then, the movement will remain a failure.

You can't call an event or act a failure unless it exists in the past. Stop (incorrectly) describing this as such.

Exactly, I urge everyone reading this to pay attention to the bill introduced tomorrow and if you happen to find the time to write to your MP, don't make the letter an inquiry, make it a DEMAND to know their stance and that you want a definite answer on this and not a maybe or we'll look into it!

As Mr. Angus has said, some people in government see us fighting this think of us as pirates, couch potatoes, or even worse, some hong kong dvd stall vendors selling pirated stuff, we are not any of that, we are citizens!
And we have rights...
We deserve net neutrality and deserve to be heard, our votes count just as much as anyone elses.
Don't remain silent, speak up and write to your MPs.

The rally is not a failure, there is news crews there, the things being mentioned will be reported, there are things being mentioned there that haven't had the exposure it deserves!
All it takes is a little bit of audience exposure and ears/eyes watching/listening...
this is only a start, and there is plenty more to come...

You should see how many people show up for 420....

Though it doesn't hurt to try.

Looks like about 40 people? Not too shabby - common govt. guys get there on your lunch break
Rocky is quoted as saying "We're expecting between 300 and 500 [protesters], and if it's any more than that, we'll consider it an amazing success,"... (Source: »www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008···lly.html)

With that being said, this is a monumental failure, unfortunately.
Well, I walked past at lunch and there were far more than 40 people there. I would peg it at around 250-300.

Just went there for my lunch (couldn't dedicate more time than that cause my work doesn't permit to, plus I'm hungry as hell now that I didn't eat, but couldn't miss any opportunity I could have to show up!)
One thing Charlie Angus said which is really important is that the NDP will introduce a law for net neutrality tomorrow!
I don't mean to rain on the parade, but a private member's bill being introduced in the House at this stage is virtually irrelevant. The rules are so prohibitive when it comes to private member's bills that the chances of it going beyond first reading are next to nil.

I agree with what you are saying that it might not have the necessary weight it deserves, however it does help that people speak up in support for this bill...
any response we get from other MPs concerning this can be used for exposure also... it's simply a matter of being able to speak up about what we believe in... there's isn't enough of that now a days!
and the way Charlie spoke of this, it's not just him that is introducing it, but the NDP...

I understand where you are coming from and agree with it to a point. But the fact of the matter is that parties don't introduce legislation, MPs do. Even if the NDP supports it, it will be one of their MPs introducing a private members bill. One piece of legislation that will then go into a pool with hundreds of others, and have virtually no chance of ever being heard from again.

Our MC for the afternoon
Attendance was actually higher than I had feared - after hearing about 15 people in Toronto and 7 from Montreal, I feared the worst. I'd say somewhere between 200-300 people, but who knows how many came and went. I met several people who had only heard about it in the nick of time (one this morning on CBC).

So, here are some pics to enjoy...

Thanks for the pics!

CBC should have had news of this beforehand, not just the day of.

No pictures of Mr. Belanger. His speech was rather anti-climactic. More on him later...

Did anyone else notice the Rogers Cable access van covering the event. Delicious irony, I should have taken a snap of it.

I just got back. Yeah, with a quick and dirty headcount I came up to a ballpark of just over 300 people. It's a little disappointing, but there was some spirit in the crowd and the host / speakers were very good. Thanks to Rocky for organizing this, it was quite the task. I reckon there is still a significant lack of awareness for people not to have joined in greater numbers (or geeks are just passive lazy asses ). Perhaps this is really just a step in building awareness. But I felt the signs didn't make it very clear to passersbys what exactly was going on, or what the issues were, hopefully the media can fill that gap; if they bother to cover the story, that is.

Some silly pics of I don't know who. These made me LOL for sure, and were probably funny to the geeks in attendance, but end up confusing everyone else...
