true, I'm not sure what he was talking about actually. He gave a 2 minute speech where he pretty much said Bell should be allowed to throttle as long as they tell us about it |

| Was definitely hoping to have closer to 500 people, but considering last minute cancellations from a bunch of people that were confirmed, I would guess we were finally between 300 and 400 somewhere.... might be worth doing a head count on one of the photos for fun!
The points were definitely made from various people and from a publicity perspective, I think there was a decent amount of media coverage, so I suspect this is and will have been a great start to many more things to come!

| reply to UT_CK said by UT_CK :Mauril Belanger was the typical liberal (being lat and as someone pointed out giving a silly anti-climatic non-commital speech). I wanted to touch on a few things that Mr. Belanger said. I hope someone recorded it so we can have a real debate on it.
He said a few things of note. First, that the owners of the 'pipes' (i.e. Bell, Rogers) have the right to make a profit on their investment in the infrastructure, but that they should not look to the government to guarantee their ROI. I actually agree, as I think most people would.
Second, he said that they should maintain the right to manage their networks, but in a consistent, predictable, transparent manner, subject to oversight by the CRTC. This is a tricky argument to make in front of a bunch of people who just finished yelling: 'Throttle it? No No No!'.
I might be persuaded to agree to this, so long as the consumer retains control of deciding which applications get priority over their finite bandwidth. No corporation has any business looking inside my data to guess what applications I'm using or types of traffic I'm generating.
Finally, Mr. Belanger tried his hardest to link this issue to climate change. He said he'd like to see priority given to videoconferencing traffic to reduce business travel, and hence climate change. On the face of it, he seemed to be blatantly contradicting the entire reason we were there.
Upon further reflection, I think he may simply be a little naive. Predictable, reliable, and content-insensitive performance is all we are looking for. Given that starting point, we are actually ensuring that any such video-conferencing business start-up has a chance of succeeding, with or without Bell's or Roger's approval. They would not likely be very accommodating given the choice.
So, upon reflection, Mr. Belanger's personal preference on this matter is only tangentially related to Net Neutrality, as NN will help ensure innovation in all market sectors. |

| reply to Flannel Good work guys, and Rocky, you are the man. I would have gone if today wasn't my wedding anniversary and my wife would have killed me to spend most of it on a bus
Someone should do bumper stickers/window stickers/license plate covers, etc for this. I would put one on my car in a heartbeat! |

Upon arriving Ottawa (near Ottawa U), I immediatly proceeded to the nearest Tim Hortons. Found 3 TSI employees there (luckyly, they didn't know who I was at the moment and I was able to buy timbits incognito).
I really wanted to takle picture sof them as they walked behind me on the way to parliament hill, but that would have been a tad too strange.
First captures of the parliament's web cam. (I used my phone to fetch an image at a particular moment and store it on my phone). |

I actually agree, as I think most people would. I agree that they should look for a reasonable ROI, but historically.. they have neglected the hand that feeds them... and are simply profiteering without investing in growth.
Ironic statement .. given that public purse has already been used to help them create that infrastructure. He also very neatly side-stepped the issue by throwing it back to the CRTC.

This is a tricky argument to make in front of a bunch of people who just finished yelling: 'Throttle it? No No No!'. IMO,This is opening up the door for Bell/Rogers to continue with the status quo. He also emphasized (their network). This is a critical public infrastructure... as carriers they have a responsibility to meet the challenges of accomodating demand... (however with a reasonable expectation of profit) .. keyword: REASONABLE.

This is an indirect attempt at establishing tiers of priority and I strongly suspect he is referring to business having priority over personal internet use.

Busiest would have been between noon and 12:45. (people got off lunch to come).
I was close to the front (next to the happy Godzilla . And at one point, I looked back and saw a LOT more people than before.
I guess I should have taken moe regular snapshots of the webcams. |
