need help with my D-Link router

i have configured my internet conection like these:
Phone Line + spliter + D-Link DSL-2640B + smoothwall + PCs
what i need to do is to let only the smoothwall as a firewall and use the D-Link only like a modem not like a router. People in other forum sugest me to put it in bridge mode and it seens to not have it, then told me to put in DMZ but seens to do nothing. What can i do?
To day i get into my router again and go to the "bridge filters" menu (that supose to be only for the wireless) and it have the next boxes:
Protocol Type:
Destination Mac Addres:
Source Mac Addres:
Frame Direction:(LANWAN ; LAN=>WAN ; WAN=>LAN)
WAN Interfaces (Configured in Bridge mode only)----information text
[]Select all----is a check box
[Appli]----is a button

Smoothwall is to be use with a PC acting like a hardware firewall but running linux software on old PC with 2 or more NIC cards

You won't need your router, you could still use it... DMZ is wide open no NAT, SPI or any router firewalls protections. Like you pop out a lock in a door to get in or out.

What features does your router offer? Or get a new upgrade router with the features you need.

Some DSL gateways allow bridging; others do not; therefore,
this looks to be one not allowing bridging, but then again,
it's very recent and powerful as a device, that I would
keep all of it's aspects functional given its quality.

I would eliminate the smoothwall.

Otherwise, go on ebay and buy a dsl modem or dsl gateway
that bellsouth, verizon users are selling, such as the
westell 2100, 2200, 6100, 327w, or speedstreams 5360,
5260, 5100b, 5100a, broadcom blaster, etc. Cost is about
$30 USD ....

so the only solution is to replace the D-link?
i cant buy a cheap router becouse im in my office and whe have about 25 pc with a lot of trafic, also these 75$ router some times hangs up and the smothwall not.
gona ask to my bost if can buy another router from a better name like 3com or cisco with bridge.

Boy we need more guys like you who can draw network plans. So why must you use smooth wall as that is slower than any hardware firewall like a cheap router.

When I use to do DSL I did it this way: Speed increased.. what you see is here I had tapped directly into the line before it gone to the filters. I use stuff you can buy at Radio Shack or Wal-mart. Those two phone boxes you see is where the Cat 5e was joined.

I have my D-Link in bridge mode, and here's how I got there.

1. Go to HOME / WAN and find the list of configured services (there's probably only one);

2. Click on "edit" and you'll be presented with the second panel in the series above. Skip that panel by clicking on "next" at the bottom of the screen;

3. The next panel will give you a choice of connection types. Choose "bridging" and then click on "next."

Go through the remaining panels and make sure your information is correct. Keep clicking on "next" until you return to the original panel you saw in step 1. Click on "finish" and your settings will be applied and the D-Link will reboot. Warning: Be sure that the VPI/VCI pair is correct for your ISP or else your external PPPoE client won't succeed in connecting.

Good luck.

Your Smoothwall machine should be properly configured after it starts up a PPPoE client which connects to the D-Link modem through one of the Smoothwall ethernet interfaces. I use Roaring Penguin PPPoE, but I don't recall if Smoothwall will start it up for you or not (I stopped using Smoothwall a couple of years ago). Once your PPPoE / PPPD clients connect, the public IP information, along with DNS and gateway information, should be supplied to it as a part of the ISP login process, and it should configure itself. You should see your public IP address assigned to interface ppp0 (a pseudo device) when the connection is complete. Just type "ifconfig -a" and you should see it.

In some cases, you may have to manually configure the DNS server information. You should consult your PPPoE documentation for the details, since they vary from client to client.

Your Smoothwall machine will of course be the gateway for your LAN machines.

Have fun.

The instructions at »martybugs.net/smoothwall/billion7402l.cgi appear to be the correct settings to use with the DSL-2540B. As far as I know, the 2540B doesn't have so-called "half bridged" mode available, and you'll have to get Smoothwall to run its own PPPoE client. The last time I used Smoothwall, it used Roaring Penguin PPPoE (rp-pppoe).

You should be aware that Roaring Penguin needs to be set up before it can be used properly. To do that manually, you have to log in as root and run the "pppoe-setup" command. You also have to have the pppd program present, because pppoe and pppd work together.

Maybe it would be easier to make sure that your hookup works properly before trying to set up Shorewall. There is an excellent firewall / pppoe / router application available called M0n0wall (»m0n0.ch/wall/) which can be run from a USB thumb drive or a CD while your setup is being tested. It is probably the simplest system to configure that I've used (it is based on FreeBSD), and it is only about 16 Megs in size. Be sure to download a version at least as recent as generic-pc-1.3b11 if you are going to boot Monowall from a thumb drive.

Monowall can be run on your Shorewall box without touching its hard drive contents, and you could then see if your ethernet ports are properly connected and are working. Monowall includes a pppoe / ppp client and all of the other stuff you need to get a nat router running, and it is configured via its own little web server.

I keep a Monowall enabled thumb drive around as a backup system.

Good luck.
