I noticed that I cannot change the pix size when using the composite video [yellow] output, which you're probably using into your std def TV. The pix dimension options only work when using the component [r-g-b] or HDMI outputs.
So, a guess you're stuck with gray borders if using the composite video output.
At least that's what I think. The DVR remote has it -- on remotes with a # key, that key does the zoom function. On a standard TV, when you view non-HD content through the HD box on an HD channel -- you will see bars on top and bottom.. On HD content on a standard TV, you will see bars on top & bottom.
