| Two amazing Battlestar Galactica games [1xRTS, 1xSim]
I'm positive many of you are fans of BSG as it is one of the greatest sci-fi show ever in my opinion. For two weeks now I've been playing two amazing BSG mods for two games, which deserve attention. In the hope you find them at the least interesting, here are the two games that will satisfy your thirst of BSG (since we're not getting that much from TV with all those breaks).
BSG: Beyond the Red Line »game-warden.com/bsg/
»www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqz-WntRPYs
This space sim is a standalone (free) game running on the Freespace 2 engine, which source code was released by Interplay a couple of years ago.
The demo is currently out, while the full thing is still under developement, and has been for a while, it is uncertain how long it will take before we have it. The demo alone is fantastic: voice acting, animations, graphics and the models, everything is just perfect.
The demo has 4 missions if memory serve, and they are squadrons forming up online. There are already a few colonial squadrons and only one Cylon squadron, because Raiders are harder to maneuver. Maybe you'll be the ones to fill up the first successful Cylon squadron I can say that online dogfighting is a blast!

This is a total conversion mod of the awesome Homeworld 2 game. Unlike BTRL, you will need Homeworld 2 to play this. It's worth getting it if you don't already have it, if only for this!
This is RTS style, and my favorite. It's is unbelievable. The mod is fully finished with a lengthy campaign. They've re-engineered all the sound effects, and the models for the Galactica and Pegasus especially are amazing.
The community on the forums is extremely active and they release a new mod version every mod. There are still minor bugs but they also keep adding features (latest version were nukes!) and when you play it you feel in command.
You can play skirmishes (the AI is pretty dumb when you play with default ships, they're working on it, so I suggest you try War of the Gods first) as well as online, which is the most fun. You have a pick of 4 races (Old/New Generation Cylons, Old/New Generation Colonials).
Colonials have the Galactica, Valkyrie, Ares, Pegasus, Columbia and Atlantia (that last one is a motherload of firepower) and all assorted sort of Vipers and Raptors.
Cylons have Patrolstars, Shieldstars, which are anti-frigate basestars, the normal basestars we know, Heavy basestars (heavy firepower), assorted raider types (nuke, scar, assault, heavy boarding raiders).
You can capture ships, jump anywhere on the map (a jump costs thylium which is the ressource you harvest from asteroids) and the Cylons especially make good use of jumping (jumping a battlestar is expansive). I just love to take a squadron of 10 nuke raiders, jump behind the fleet, launch nukes and jump away! Satisfaction guaranteed!
There's probably a lot I'm missing here but I highly suggest both mods!
Have fun! |

| reply to TigerLord Nice find! I love the BSG series, to bad it's coming to an end on Sci-Fi
I have played BSG:ByRL before, pretty tricky flying the raptors when I tried it out about a year or so ago.
I'm definatly going to download the BSG: Fleet Commander! |

| reply to TigerLord README in the install folder of the game! Or if you download the .big install, it will do it all for you.
If you want a custom res which HW2 doesn't natively support you'll need to edit the shortcut to launch the game in your monitor's res (mine is 1680x1050) |

| reply to TigerLord I tried out a couple of scenerios, but the widescreen resolution crashes the game a lot, making any kind of sustained playability impossible. 1680x1050 as well. -- ~ Project Hope ~ |

I downloaded "Beyond the Red Line" last night, installed it, ran the updater patch, and went through the first simulator training mission. It looks great and runs very smoothly. I have not played a "space" simulator since the old Privateer game. The graphics have come a long way since then! As expected, there is a learning curve regarding all the cockpit controls, but I expect I can map most of them to my joystick. Looks like this is going to be a lot of fun!
Thanks for posting the information!
