milnoc : Yes, I did remember to compress the audio. :) In fact, I usually compress the audio for my YouTube videos in the mp3 format at 44.1KHz 160kbps CBR just to improve the sound quality a little bit. For the BitTorrent distribution however, I'll use a much higher bitrate so that people have some maneuvering room.

I'll work on the 2-pass encoding this weekend. I've never been able to get it work properly using the original XviD codec, but I'll try out the ffdshow filters instead. They seem to give me much more flexibility, but I'm not sure about the performance.

anon : You probably should use the 2 pass option in Xvid. The first pass lets the encoder build a profile of the entire video and the 2nd pass is where it figure out how to distribute the data rate so that more space is allocated where it is needed most.

Remember to compress the audio too, eh? ;)

Thank you for your e-mail regarding net neutrality and Mr. Angus’ (NDP-Timmins-James Bay, Ont.) Bill.

It certainly has become an issue in the last couple of months, which is why the CRTC has decided to investigate it. I look forward to their report as we move forward on this issue.

With regards to Mr. Angus’ Private Members’ Bill (PMB), I am not yet familiar with it. The introduction of a PMB at First Reading only allows for the Bill to be printed by the Crown. Following that, the process is based on a random draw conducted by the Speaker at the opening of the 39th Parliament, which is called the List of Consideration of Private Members’ Business. The House generally gets through approximately 30 PMBs per session (we are currently in the 2nd Session of the 39th Parliament). Since January of 2006, the House has dealt with around 70 PMBs. On the List, Mr. Angus is at 183. I do not anticipant the House to come anywhere near number 183 before the next election. At that time, the whole process is reset all over again.

Members often use the PMB process to get their name in the media regarding a popular issue, knowing that their Bill will never come up for debate. A good example of this is Mr. Martin (NDP-Winnipeg Centre, Man.) and his PMB to get rid of the penny. Another example of one would be Mr. Stoffer (NDP-Sackville-Eastern Shore, N.S.), who is number 114 on the list. He may in fact find his spot come up for consideration, but will have to choose only one of the 35 PMBs that he has tabled.

Flannel : Actually, the more I think about it, the more this is a democratic media issue. If milnoc or chromiumdr want to publish their documentary material about the Net Neutrality rally via BT or any other form of peer to peer, user to user, medium and Bell throttles it, they are effectively discriminating against it (while favoring their own media).

Perhaps this issue and P2P could be properly explained to the general public using this very example of Bell's anti-free speech casualties due to their business practices. I can imagine headlines could potentially be effective, like, oh I don't know: Bell hinders the distribution of public protest material criticizing BCE. (uh... let's not forget Rogers and Primus)

I don't think we have an upload limit in size. I think it depends on connection speed.

You might not have one at the app level, but you might have a limit on the size of a HTTP POST payload, either intentionally or through something broken in Apache, mod_perl, etc.

It's still there, runs fine (under Windows), but yes, it is "Windows Media" player based. :(

tertech ... to clarify, I didn't take off with his girlfriend !! LOL She approached me and said her boyfriend really liked my shirt, and asked where they could buy some. I had made it and others for my clan, and didn't even have the notion anyone else would want one. I wasn't about to take any $$ for it, so I literally "gave her the shirt off my back". LOL (I had a sweater on underneath)

The neutrality movement lacks sex, scandel and someone trying to sell the story to the highest bidder.

Seems that's what sells with the major news players.

The only thing I've seen about the rally on The National (CBC) was the Godzilla blowup toy during the endless coverage of the Bernier debacle. It was used in reference to the things Parliament Hill has seen (it was on screen for the narrator to say "strange" or "silly, I can't remember which but it was used as stock footage with a turn of phrase)

Yeah unfortunately, nobody bothered to properly print out enough information and pass it around in PUBLIC areas... so most of all the people aware and anxious about this came from the forums.. which is ok, but it does nothing for the majority of the average person ...

BUT ... the fact that most of the major news broadcasters showed up and made their own cast for TV, so it got this out on TV so people will still see this when they get home from work, and then start asking questions and saying " what is this all about " and then people will tell them and it will start getting discussed more and more now that it has caught their attention. Atleast the public will ask for answers to what this was about, and hopefully they will find someone technically savvy who can explain and direct them to forums or websites with all the info since march.

its about relaying the proper information now.

and if some people dont think this has anything to do with "their" internet.. they will soon find out sooner or later.

Yes, it was like an audience of geek groupies, but the message was clear and the speakers were well spoken. and its going to be on all the news channels, so thats what counts in the end.

This is a bit short notice to support the bill .. since its tommorow to be brought up, nobody will even get the link until its all over.

but regardless, we have to keep looking ahead ... its a long summer.. until the fall.

Guspaz : That's because few people at the rally were taking pictures during the actual speeches. Most of the pictures were taken before, between, or after speeches. And at that point people begun to talk among themselves, or at one point do some cheers.

Yeah .. unfortunately, I slept in this morning since I took half the day off for the rally, I was lazy in getting up but I walked in just about 12:15ish when Belanger was speaking..

Since I was already geared up to support whatever was happening/being said, I was already in the " YES!!!! WOHOO !!!" mode.. not really realizing what was being said.. and then he snaps about the bill. I think everyone was shocked.

I wanted to scream " READ IT CAREFULLY !!!!!!!, but i havent had my coffee yet..

thats the thing with a group full of geeks, many are too anti-social to scream whats on their mind, especially when it counts, lol ...

Why isnt there a MP who is strictly in the Technology area of the government... who would make decisions and analyze it with real technology diplomas and degrees from schools, who would advise the parties what to do.

Because honestly, how would that ever work in the government with 60year old members who have never used a PC to save the life of them.

when worse comes to worse, only in a few years will the vast majority of subscribers start noticing the bullshit with their connection, when they get sick of their poor service and finally get fed up with paying so much for nothing, and will want to look into it more and try to switch. Then find out why thats not a possiblity at the moment.

I thought it was well organized, despite the lack of people... I bet nobody spread any flyers around because it was last minute for info ... so nobody knew except people on the msg boards which is not a lot.

I found his speech highly informative.

He made it quite clear he didn't speak for the liberal party. (is there anyone who can ?). When he started to link this with cimate change, I knew he wasn't really preparered/educated on the issue. So he sent a strong message that the Liberal party isn't ready to fight for us at this point in time. So at least he was honest.

The message: there is a lot of work to be done to get the Liberals to move their butts. This need not be a confidence issue. They could support the NDP's bill (assuming it is OK) for instance. With the Bloc, they could pass that motion.

On the othert hand, with the Structure of the reform/conservative party, it might be an easier job to grease George W Harper's paws. Once he suports us, he will ensure the rest of the party follows.

R0CKY : Was definitely hoping to have closer to 500 people, but considering last minute cancellations from a bunch of people that were confirmed, I would guess we were finally between 300 and 400 somewhere.... might be worth doing a head count on one of the photos for fun!

The points were definitely made from various people and from a publicity perspective, I think there was a decent amount of media coverage, so I suspect this is and will have been a great start to many more things to come!

UT_CK : I was at the rally. I met Rocky...(briefly.. but had to shake his hand in recognition of all he has done to promote this and the excellent service he provides to us TekSavvyers) and the rally was a success. :)

I feel very good I could show up. I'm glad I could make a small difference. It was like going to church .. although it's a chore going in ... you feel good when you get out ... LOL

To all those who could show... I applaud you ... especially those who bused in.

There were about 250 people there +- 50 at any given time.

Mauril Belanger was the typical liberal (being late and as someone pointed out giving a silly anti-climatic non-commital speech).

The VP of Capital Freenet took him up on the question of wether he would support the Charlie Angus bill tomorro .. and he side-stepped it with the usual finess of a true politician (puke bags anyone ?).

Charlie Angus's speech was very motivational and he came across as being genuine.

It would have been great if more from Ottawa (government brown-baggers) could have shown.

Thank you. I love a 300mm lens. You can get right in someone's face and they don't even know you're there :D. Honestly I don't remember the aperture for that DOF; probably a fluke. I didn't have a lot of time to be artistic; people kept walking through the shot.

Edit: Thanks Gabe. I tried explaining lolcat to someone... it's hard! :p But it was really funny at first because they thought he was illiterate. :D But then I thought that perhaps passerbys would think the same thing. :huh:

Flannel : I just got back. Yeah, with a quick and dirty headcount I came up to a ballpark of just over 300 people. It's a little disappointing, but there was some spirit in the crowd and the host / speakers were very good. Thanks to Rocky for organizing this, it was quite the task. I reckon there is still a significant lack of awareness for people not to have joined in greater numbers (or geeks are just passive lazy asses :p). Perhaps this is really just a step in building awareness. But I felt the signs didn't make it very clear to passersbys what exactly was going on, or what the issues were, hopefully the media can fill that gap; if they bother to cover the story, that is.

Abattoir : Attendance was actually higher than I had feared - after hearing about 15 people in Toronto and 7 from Montreal, I feared the worst. I'd say somewhere between 200-300 people, but who knows how many came and went. I met several people who had only heard about it in the nick of time (one this morning on CBC).

I understand where you are coming from and agree with it to a point. But the fact of the matter is that parties don't introduce legislation, MPs do. Even if the NDP supports it, it will be one of their MPs introducing a private members bill. One piece of legislation that will then go into a pool with hundreds of others, and have virtually no chance of ever being heard from again.

I don't mean to rain on the parade, but a private member's bill being introduced in the House at this stage is virtually irrelevant. The rules are so prohibitive when it comes to private member's bills that the chances of it going beyond first reading are next to nil.

All it takes is a little bit of audience exposure and ears/eyes watching/listening...

Gnaraktol : Exactly, I urge everyone reading this to pay attention to the bill introduced tomorrow and if you happen to find the time to write to your MP, don't make the letter an inquiry, make it a DEMAND to know their stance and that you want a definite answer on this and not a maybe or we'll look into it!

As Mr. Angus has said, some people in government see us fighting this think of us as pirates, couch potatoes, or even worse, some hong kong dvd stall vendors selling pirated stuff, we are not any of that, we are citizens!
And we have rights...
We deserve net neutrality and deserve to be heard, our votes count just as much as anyone elses.
Don't remain silent, speak up and write to your MPs.

Not at all. I'm only comparing the number of people there versus what Rocky has defined as a success.

However, in the end, the real definition of success will be when the Government defines policies or laws for Net Neutrality, no matter how many protests occur.

Until then, the movement will remain a failure.

I have already written my MP about Prentice's upcoming DMCA bill, I will likely email and call regarding the NDP neutrality bill following its introduction to the house. One thing Charlie Angus said which is really important is that the NDP will introduce a law for net neutrality tomorrow!

He gave a really good motivating speech!
He suggested we write to the government once the bill is proposed and that we demand a response from MPs concerning their position on this new law, and that we mention that their position will influence our decisions on future ridings and such... That we do not accept a brush off or a response saying that their riding is looking into it, but a firm response on whether they support it or deny it in our letters.
I think it's a good idea!
Thought I would share this tidbit with you folks while this is going on, gonna see if I can go back on my next break!
