game server in ATL, i live in TN, routing thru NYC?????

so what gives comcast techs? my ping to the game server that i play Counter Strike Source on used to be in the single digits.

it has slowly crept upward in the last 4 months, now it is in the mid 70's. i ran a tracert to the server and i go from Chattanooga to Nashville to New York to 2 other locations then to Atlanta.

WHY?!?!?! here is my trace. someone needs to explain this and possibly remedy it before i call the 800 number and really show my ass.

Looks like the server host peers into PCCW and Comcast only peers with PCCW in LA, albeit with a 10Gig Ethernet interface.

My traceroute looks like it goes to cali, but I think someone just forgot to update the reverse DNS on the AT&T to Savvis peering point in NYC.

It appears Comcast also peers with BTN somewhere close to Chicago (hop #6 is a PCCW/BTN access router 6ms from the Chicago core):

california? what in gods name is comcast thinking? wow i wish they would leave things alone. there is no reason to tamper with routing in this manner. granted, the basic net user probably wont pick up on something like this, but an online game shows any lag present. a web page ping doesnt really matter.

any level3 techs around to explain what is going on?

There's no way this is intentional. Comcast has some fairly significant route propagation issues going on right now, as you could probably tell if you've noticed the outage threads. They've got little screwy problems like the Chicago core preferring the Denver core for a Minnesota /17 netblock even though the Roseville, MN aggregation pair is directly connected:

Which should look something more like this:

Either they are running into a code bug on their CRS1 core devices, or they've got a massively hosed BGP route reflector on their network. Either way, the situation is ugly at the moment.

it has gotten worse over the last 3 weeks. it crept up to 25, then 30 then it went to 50 and now im hovering around 75ms. i am going ot have other server players run it too so i can see whats going on and where its localized at.

Having the same problem here in chicago, our game server is 18 miles away from me yet comcast is routing my data all over north america. This started about 2 weeks ago & has gotten increasingly worse as time has passed. Normally i get a 6 to 10ms ping to this server. On average its 50ms to 100 now. Some members are even closer to the server are getting routed to LA for a 150 to 200 ping to a server thats less then 10 miles from them...
My data is going in most cases more then 1200+ miles to get to services here in chicago. When i called comcast about this they said that this is normal & how the internet works (what) so they sent a truck out anyway (not like they can do anything to help, they are line techs) the guys were great, spent about 20mins on his radio & was repeatedly told that comcast does not have a networking dept & they dont know who manages the routers/switches, & he talked to at least 4 ppl that i know of & his supervisor, nothing they can do, so they said sry & good luck. So it would seem that comcast doesnt think this is a problem & it doesnt seem they are going to do anything about it anytime soon...
Time to call WOW see if i can get them where im at...

I had the same problem with a game server that's in Europe. Before it used to go from a Chicago Level3.net server straight to Washington D.C. My tracert gained 10ms because it went from Chicago to Indianapolis and then into Atlanta then to Washington D.C. I then proceeded to change my IP address and for some reason my routing went back to normal. It seemed the different route and increase of 10ms was tied to the IP address that I had.

You need to change your NIC's MAC address. Comcast thinks you are a new identity and will issue you a new IP address.

Hop #13 is having major issues with packet loss. But the destination address looks pretty good.

That's not exactly why/how it functions, but the end result is the same regardless.

this is a shame. the tech department needs to step it up and get the routing fixed. i pay way too much f@^#ing money for this problem to be present.

Is your new IP addy still on the same subnet as was your previous one ?

Sometimes forcing a change of IP as you have will put you on a different subnet. Typically, this will have more of an effect on one's return path routing (which a forward trace doesn't reveal) rather than one's forward routing path.
