I first tried to install SP1 about 2-3 weeks ago. The install failed "SP1 did not install. Reverting changes."
Last weekend there was another patch available. I installed that. It then again offered SP1. It failed again. Then I was offered KB938371. That installed. Then I was offered SP1 yet again. It failed yet again. Then I was re-offered KB938371 (which now shows as having been installed twice). After that, it offered XP1 for the fourth time. I declined - there is a limit to how much time I have for such nonsense in one day. I will put off my next attempt for a few weeks. Just to add: I had no problem at all with the update today. But, I downloaded the exe file to disk and installed offline with no 'extra's' running like AV etc etc.
It seems in my experience that this is the way to avoid the worst [ if possible ]....

| reply to starfish8 have had a new hp slimline s3400f machine for 30 days; on 5/29 machine stopped booting & took a startup repair, then go to restore point to boot. was getting msg that "a patch is preventing the system from starting". finally got the machine to boot. not sure if a vista update or patch hosed me up but this morning i downloaded the kb947562 update. machine appeared to boot normally on the restart. anyone else have this bizarre issue? will the kb947562 update fix the hosed boots? thanks, bub |
