Re: Symantec tells users: Disable protection before SP3...

said by bcastner:

By the way, if you did not follow the Symantec advice above and disable this feature, and have registry corruption after the installation of Service Pack 3, I wrote a "fix" for this: »aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=3···k=t&sd=a
bcastner, thank you for the fix. Despite NotJustNIS' nitpicks (on-target, by the way, in that other AVs are troubled by sp3 as well), your fix saved the bacon for a number of my noobie friends who didn't listen to my advice about waiting to install sp3 nor my standing advice to always turn off running AVs and ATs before doing any Windows Update, much less a huge service pack.

Just wanted to make sure kudos were given where deserved, for all your hard work.

Thank you for the kind comments and feedback. That was very nice of you to make the effort to do so.

Best wishes,

At the risk of being further accused of nitpicking (pettiness, or being misinformed), I'll spell out a couple of admittedly minor points with the fix instructions posted by Bill in that AumHa Forums link he provided early on.

The last two lines of the "instruction set" state:

Reboot again.
You can reinstall your Norton product at this time.

Since there wasn't a prior reboot (involved in the instructions, anyway), it seems that "Reboot again" might confuse some. If nothing else, as I reviewed that, I was looking around to see where I had been told to reboot the first time. Or that some step in the process would do a reboot for me. After all, the timing (and type) of reboots can be critical when making fixes to a system.

And it was the next line (reinstall Norton products), that lead me to raise that point earlier. Seems the instructions currently assume you've uninstalled anything Norton, by the time you get there. Not necessarily the case. And Bill already stated here that he sees no need to uninstall "NIS products".

Bill's response to another poster at the AumHa thread indicates some additional instructions might help. Points Bill covered included making sure Norton protection (or any other app that might impact the ability to modify the registry) isn't active. And rebooting in safe mode (and disconnecting from the internet) before using the suggested RegSeeker fix--maybe that's where the first reboot comes in, instruction-wise.

Why not fix those minor instruction issues, rather than grouse at me for bringing it up? I guess the answer could be "people will know (or figure out) what I meant...or I'll clarify as I go"? (But I won't leap to conclusions about Bill's intentions...and I would hope for similar treatment.)

Give it a rest you silly bugger..if you want to help with the process so everyone understand it..got for it..but stop with the ego trip stuff..this is the DSLR Security Forum and if you want to whack a member here for what they posted in other forums and take the whole ball of wax into this thread cause you need some attention..suggest you handle your gripes at each forum in kind and get on with the issue at hand and not your own.

Thanks
If you got a good step by step method for a fix that is easily understood by everyone..then post it..improve on what others have posted ..even Bill's..that will help everyone now and in the future as they read this thread.
Do a little collaboration...

Collaboration is a structured, recursive process where two or more people work together toward a common goal—typically an intellectual endeavor that is creative in nature—by sharing knowledge, learning and building consensus. Collaboration does not require leadership and can sometimes bring better results through decentralization and egalitarianism. In particular, teams that work collaboratively can obtain greater resources, recognition and reward when facing competition for finite resources.

People will thank you for it.

Name Game...pardon me, but ego tripping?

My first post (with a slight dig at Bill, I'll admit) was attacked, but when I added more info he thanked me for it, and even admitted his position might need rethinking.

And my last post was hardly a "whack"...and fits the definition of a collaborative effort, even if I wasn't "invited" to provide my thoughts.

Bill didn't post all of that info from AumHa here, he posted a link. Could I have responded there? Sure, but I gave my feedback here, since that's where I had started out--however well my feedback was received (or not).

But I don't need to defend my efforts to you. So I'll give it a rest. Thanks for the advice, and a reminder of why I don't drop by more often.

You are always invited and welcome..not looking for you to defend..just please help..you are talented..understand the problem and the fix..and surely can improve on it or any others as more information materializes of the similar problems people are having since the orginal postings.

Be Well,
John
