EFF, for a number of years, has offered an anonymous proxy service. It would be useful for those people that fell under NebuAd and wanted to stay out from under prying eyes. All that NebuAd would know is that you did a whole lotta surfing of to the EFF proxy server. Beyond that, not so much.

Even if you use the proxy, the deep packet inspection (at isp level) will see your packets. So the proxy will do you zero (0) good. | |

Arlington, VA | Re: EFF? Anonymous proxies generally don't encrypt your browsing sessions with SSL, do they? Maybe EFF's does, I don't know. Your ISP couldn't break SSL if it wanted to, anyway. The AES and Triple DES ciphers used for SSL and IPSec data is unbreakable, even by the NSA as far as we know. So trust me, your ISP is not looking at your bank transactions.
For true privacy you need a VPN tunnel. VPNGates, SecureIX, Relakks, Steganos are all good VPN providers. If opting out isn't enough and you want guaranteed protection from ISP sniffing, just pay a few bucks a month for a tunnel. | |

It's been several years since I looked at the service that EFF initially offered. It's possible that it doesn't. It would be kind of silly, however, for a privacy advocate, to offer a half-assed privacy service, though. At the time they were initially offering it, it was a for-fee service on top of your basic EFF membership.
Looking at the EFF website, it looks like the original service may have been subsumed by the TOR project. I'm not seeing indications that the TOR entry point is SSL-protected. Then again, given the way that TOR works, it may not be meaningful in the context of NebuAD.
