What was the point?

What I don't get is what was the purpose other than being a nuisance. They could have easily set-up a site to capture millions of users passwords to do all kinds a devious things. I honestly wouldn't rule out the possibility that may have taken place for a while without out anyone detecting it and then the hackers put that up to look like a standard defacing. That just makes more sense to me if I were to go through the trouble of "hacking" and redirecting DNS info.
