| Pool Refurbishment Recommendations
Greetings all,
Anyone have any personal experience with having a new pool installed or a pool refurbished? I'm looking for recommendations since our 30+ year old pool is in desperate need of an overhaul. I'd be happy to have it removed and get a nice hot tub installed but the wife insists on keeping a pool. Who am I to argue?
I'm only looking for recommendations from personal or hear-say experiences. We can easily find listings in the yellow pages
EDIT: I should add that it's an in-ground, concrete pool. I pretty much have to have everything replaced including the deck, plumbing, piping pumps (2), heater and propane tank. I think the only thing that won't be replaced is the trap at the bottom of the pool and the bowl itself...though it does need some fresh plaster.
I need to hit the lottery to pay for this.

| No idea, I put a new liner in the 24' aboveground myself. I deal with 3 places on BelAir Rd just outside the beltway, one tests water for free, one has the oddball parts (like filter gaskets), and one has a lot more of the furnishings/accessories. They all sell pools, and have all been there ever since I moved here and "inherited" a pool 10+ years ago. Leslie's and NAMCO are part of bigger outfits, and ABC Pools is a single location. I'd get estimates from all three, but my preference would be towards ABC, since the people there just more helpful/friendly/ comfortable to deal with for me, may be part of having owner/management on site as opposed to a chain of command. -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. | We've got a local outfit around here called Gene Lilly's pool supplies in Severna Park. I go there for parts. I get my chlorine from BJ's (only like HTH) and winterizing items from waterwarehouse.com.
You can bet we'll be getting several people to look at it and give us estimates and ideas. Half the problem is deciding exactly what to do. |

| What size pool? I know if it ever came down to a major redo, I'd be also checking dropping from a 24' to an 18'. Cheaper to treat, clean, heat, and I really find I don't need it that big at all, but since it is already there...
Gotta check waterwarehouse where I've gotten stuff is in this thread »Re: solar pool heaters
Usually I buy my DE and Chlorine in the fall when the locals drop prices and vice-versa for winterizing. (and dollar store for noodles) Didn't buy any DE last year and still have over 3 cartons left If no one else chimes in with suggestions, please be sure to add what you found/decided/did. -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. | reply to seaquake It's roughly 20' x 40' oval with a hot tub. The hot tub motor didn't start last spring so that's pretty much out of commission. The heater is ancient and I'm afraid to mess with it.
My wife came home and said she has "Stevenson" pools coming out near the end of June to see what we've got. They say they are swamped and she reiterated that we're just getting an idea of what we are in for right now. She got REALLY upset when I suggested we just bag it and fill it in.
I think I've got a damn leak in one of the outlet pipes that's 2 feet or so underground. I have no clue what path they take so tomorrow I'm going to do some exploratory holes and see if they fill up with water. Pool ownership is a PITA. |

| reply to seaquake Roger that. My sister in law got two prices for her pool (in ground with cement deck and plastic liner about the same size as yours) and it was 20 grand cheaper to bust up the slab and fill it in than it was to repair it.
It's getting filled in. -- Team Discovery |

| reply to seaquake Got our first estimate of $74,000. That includes demolition of the old pool and building a brand new one out of gold and diamonds. Geezus, my head hit the desk when I read that one. I'm sure I can do without a lot of what they quoted for us but we're still looking at $60K at best from that company.
We've got two others coming out this month. I'm hopeful they'll have less drastic ideas (and prices). I cringe at paying over $20K for a car so you can imagine how I feel about this |
