| you will sometimes get some channels even with a trap if you have high speed internet. most cable operators have auditors that go out and check taps on the cable lines for right filters being on the lines and to make sure the right houses have cable connection at the tap. -- BSD |

| True. And some techs will not put them on thinking it is just another passive device that can go bad, get water, get corroded and cause a service issue down the road. And then some are just lazy.
There are also times during big CHSI pushes that there are so many installs that they local warehouse will run out of expanded filters.
All of this should be taken care of next year however... -- CableTechs.org/"Horrible People with Integrity" |

How many of you have limited basic with no trap ? Therefore you can pick up expanded without issues. Maybe this is just me, but I'm curious, why is there a need to get a head count or poll on? How does this benefit anyone or make your cable tv experience any better or worse?
Is there a reason you need this data? .. or is this just a badge of honor?
If you were doing the right thing, you'd call the company and tell them to either bill you for the service, or come out and "fix" your cable. I know the answer to this already, but still.
If this was the other way around, (over trapping) I bet $1,000 that you'd be on the phone to customer service screaming and yelling at them that your service wasn't working right, and your post here would have been a rant.
I just can't understand why people don't do the right thing on the other side of things and tell them you're service isn't right. (It's because this benefits you)
I guess its only bad if the consumer looses, but ok if you're getting one over on the big bad company. When it comes to this sort of issue, I can't have any sympathy for this type of person when the shoe is on the other foot.
Do the right thing. |

| reply to Hawkeye77 The only thing trapped for me is HBO and HBO 2. I actually Macgyvered open the box and removed it and had free HBO and HBO 2 for 2 or 3 years. Then someone came and put a new one on. I never watched very often though. So if I I would've gotten caught and had to pay that fine I certainly wouldn't have goten my money's worth.
Could someone explain this whole trapping thing to me? Why can't HBO and HBO2 be scrambled (or whatever you call it nowadays) like other channels you're not supposed to get? Why do they have to block channels at your house instead of at the headend.
Another thing. My system doesn't officially have HBO 2 on the analog tier, but its on channel 98 (at least it was up until they put a new filter on a year ago or so). HBO is 99. But HBO is also on channel 24. Whats that about?
Is it a bad idea to confess cable theft here? Will Comcast track me down and come after me? |

| reply to heat84 I think some very old HBO contracts in a few systems required that HBO be trapped, so that every TV in a house can receive it without a box. Most of those contracts are expired and no longer valid. Thankfully, because removing analog trapped HBO allows for 12 SD channels or up to 3 HD channels in that same space. |

Well, the transition to digital won't necessarily affect trapping, due to the potential to use in-the-clear QAM as a marketing advantage for expanded basic channels. |
