[speed/latency] slow speeds

hey, ive noticed over the course of several weeks that my speed has slowly decreased...it used to download at 429kbps and then it dropped to roughly 385kbps and tonight when i ran speed tests it has gone down to 350kbps, (my upload speed however has never changed) and ive come to the conclusion that verizon tech support is basically useless and blames it on my computer, even though Norton, NOD32 detect no viruses, and my spyware programs do not detect anything either. has anyone encountered this problem? or better yet have any possible solution to this problem?
Thanks

Yes. It happened every night during peak use hours.

Support was very helpful and actually improved things for me in non-peak hours, but the decline continued until my connection was essentially 384k down, 768 up in the evenings.

I tried everything, including making sure my MTU was set correctly on my router.

I disconnected my service last week and went with cable.

Run a couple of Line Quality Tests on this site, and post links to those. Also, post up your modem stats from :
192.168.1.1/transtat.htm
Also, are you using Vista?
Finally, run a speedtest from speakeasy.net/speedtest , and post a speedtest from both Los Angeles, and the New York City server.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,

Your modem is out of sync. At that attenuation, it looks like you're stuck with the 768k/128k speed. Reboot your modem and see if the sync improves first of all. If it does, wait to see how long it takes for it to slow down again, or if it doesn't sync properly, there's another problem somewhere else.

well im paying for the package that comes with 768kbps...and yes ive tried rebooting my modem...that does not solve the problem..the issue is that my download speeds have slowed from roughly 55KB/sec down to 40-45KB/sec and it may not seem like much to faster tiers of internet, but in my view its a lot for me.

Well, then the cause seems to be something with the margin. Even with the sync at 448, your margin is only 7 on the downstream which is bad, considering DSL starts to crap out around a margin of 6dB if anything, while the upstream is nice and high. Can you plug the modem directly into your NID to see if it improves at all? I've seen DSL modems personally hold 768kbps/128kbps (an old Westell 2200 I think as well) at the same attenuation as yours, but at a margin of 15dB. See what the NID shows.

hey, im sorry but im rather new at working with my modem and such, so just to help me...what did you mean by 'Can you plug the modem directly into your NID to see if it improves at all?' like what is a NID? sorry bout that

Well OK. Do you know that gray box that is on the side of your house or inside of your basement where the copper line goes into? That's the NID. Pretty much, it serves as the direct connection to the copper line from that box, or serves your house with telephone. There are two parts to that, Customer Access (which is what we need to open) and Telco Access (don't touch this!). Open up the Customer Access, and there should be a telephone jack free or something plugged in there. Unplug the telephone jack, and put only your DSL modem on there. You'll want a laptop to help you with this though, or a long enough phone cord to reach where your PC is or move your PC. Once the modem is powered on and directly plugged into that box (the house phone lines SHOULD be dead), check your line stats again. If they are better outside, then it's an inside wiring issue that's messing with your DSL and you'll need to do a direct run from the NID to the modem.

Someone here can explain this better than me though. I'm used to doing it myself.

well ive managed to hook my computer up to the jack you told me too however i am sitting in my bathroom and the speed i am getting is way faster then before...speakeasy speedtest is telling me 746kbps now...which is wayyy faster then what i ever had...so what should we do now?

reply to Predator117
how would i go about hooking it directly up to the NID? i mean the wire that comes into my house goes from that box outside into a place downstairs where all the phones jacks in the house are hooked up and it leads to where my modem is now so how would i directly hook it up?

You have some sort of internal wiring issue you need to isolate and fix.

Like I said, it's an internal wiring problem since you get full speeds from the NID. The first thing to do is disconnect everything else connected to a phone line to see if it's device that's causing the problem. If it works, then re-connect things one at a time until you find the culprit.

If it still doesn't work, you will need to check all of your wiring and jacks for shorts, loose connections, corrosion, etc.
