There are plenty of independent coffee shot that offer free wifi no questions ask, but do buy something and do not linger all day.

 Because not everyone lives in Portland Oragon where there is an indy shop on every pier. People live in urban or suburban areas where there are chains at every strip mall or downtown intersection.

I frequent neither indy or chain. I have a nice espresso machine at home and have my own 3G card.

This may be a dumb question, but do you need an iPhone data plan if you plan to only use home wifi and free wifi for internet connection? I'd probably get a data plan for the (rumored) GPS functionality, but was just curious.
