| where to split Cable inside or outside?
does it make a difference?
We have 2 RG-6 cables running from the outside of our house to a structured wiring box in the utility room. So theses cables go both from/to the same location and they are probably close to 100ft long.
Brighthouse ran their cable to our house and put a splitter on the outside. Then as I explained both lines run to the same structured wiring box 100ft away. One connects to another splitter to feed multiple TVs. The other one connects to our cable modem which is housed also inside the box in the utility room.
My question is, wouldn't it make more sence to only use one of the RG6 cables to get inside the house and put the TV/internet splitter inside? So the question is, would it improve signal to split as late as possible? 100ft later? Is there any reason not to do this?
I'm asking, because we keep having trouble with our modem loosing sync and disconnecting us from the internet. No issues with the TVs. |

1 edit | It really shouldn't matter all that much. A cable signal coming into a home should be able to handle being split one time and run 100'.
But yes, I would think two weaker signals travelling on two wires would be more prone to interference/loss of signal than one stronger signal split just before use.
Go to 192.168.100.1 and check your modem's signal levels. Try reconfiguring the wiring as you describe, and check them again. Maybe one of the two runs is just bad?

| reply to jojo786 I just moved the splitter to the inside. This is what I'm getting now: Name WebSTAR DPC2100 Modem Serial Number 103212598 Cable Modem MAC Address xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hardware Version v1.1 Software Version v2.0.1r1133(dpc2100-v201r1133a.p7b.twc_signed) Receive Power Level 3.1 dBmV Transmit Power Level 43.5 dBmV Cable Modem Status Operational
Receive Power Level has changed. It used to be around 0.9 dBmV when the splitter was located outside. But is this any improvement? I'm not really sure what these numbers mean ... |

| 3 is a couple db stronger than 0.9, but both are well within range (needs to be bewteen -15 and 15 to work).
In other words, your signal level appears to be excellent. Keep checking them and ensure they stay relatively stable (not jumping around).
