100% Urban Legend.
If you really want to save gas, these two things will get you the most out of your vehicle assuming that you maintain the oil and oil filter plus all the regular maintenance schedules on time.
1] Install a Vacuum/Economy Gauge and stay in the Green Zone at all times will improve your mileage.
 Vacuum Economy Gauge
2] Keep tires properly inflated according to door jamb sticker or glove box sticker (or owners manual) checking once per week. Invest in a quality Digital Tire Pressure Gauge ($10-$20 dollars).
