I signed up for Cricket Broadband at the store, took my modem home and it would not work. Message indicated that the software supposedly included in the modem was missing. I took the modem back to the store and they made me pay a $10 fee for an insurnace replacement. I did not know I had insurance. They had signed me up for $5 insurance without my knowledge. It worked, almost as fast as dial up. Do I recommend Cricket. Only if you cant find dial up for less than $40 a month. |

The insurance may have been in the agreement, but I dont recall signing anything. Be that as it may, my signal strenth is a full three or four bars. I was getting good download speeds ( 50k and better) on the first few days only. Now 20K per sec is the best I can do. |

The 9th and final call to tech support this month and a talk with the supervisor reveals Cricket's tricky and dishonest method of determining bandwidth distribution. It seems that my bandwidth usage isn't being determined by billing cycle (1st to 31st of every month) but by some rollover method. So instead of me getting full bandwidth at the beginning of my billing cycle (like I have pretty much have every month in the past 7 months except the few occasions I've had to call and complain and ask for a reset) it appears that the cycle is *really* how many GB did i download between today, the 12th, and the 12th of last month. She stated that this was in the agreement I signed. So even though I've paid in advance for full bandwidth for October I will receive dialup speeds for the duration of my contract. I asked her to discontinue my service immediately and refund me the balance - she stated that this is impossible. I expected far much more for 40 dollars a month and, as a fairly longtime customer, better treatment too. |

| reply to RockyBB Cricket Broadband: Consumer Fraud in My Opinon
Cricket told me my broadband card would work seamlessly with my Outlook 2007. They lied, in fact 3 of them at their corporate store lied. It does not work, they block all ports. I tried taking the modem back, however after 3 days sorry-bud, its yours regardless whether we lied or made a mistake. This company is a ripoff, the broadband is cheap, so is their service. Very slow when I've tested it around Austin. Cricket needs to let consumers know they cant use Outlook with Cricket broadband cards. Hope this company goes out of business, trying to reach their customer service is horrific, and they don't care about help you. |

Cricket does work with Outlook - you just need to use an alternate port other than 25 for outgoing mail. |

1 edit | I posted this previously! This is the outlook configuration with Cricket because Cricket blocks port 25.

| reply to formeat I have had Cricket for a lil over 2 weeks....have had no issues with speed/ disconnects/or any other problems posted........I used to tether my HTC TouchPro2 thru TMobile and I must say Cricket is by far faster in Chicago. And my Outlook 2007 works perfectly without s=changing my settings.
Maybe speed and disconnects have to do with the are/city you are in.

| reply to formeat I've had Cricket since July and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone...Here are my speeds with 3 out of 4 bars. If you notice my upload speed is higher than my download speed.
I am in the process of switching to Millenicom's 3g truly unlimited service. It runs off of sprint's towers which average about 1.2 to 1.4 mbps. |

| reply to formeat Had the Cricket BB for almost a week now. Looking for a way to get my bit-torrent client to connect. Perhaps get a different client, not sure yet. I ended up getting the 10Gig a month plan to allow large file DL's There must be a workaround to the client not recieving connections. Any suggestions? |

| reply to formeat Just throwing my 2 cents in....I have had cricket for a little less than a year. I live outside the Chattanooga TN area and get very decent connection speed (at least decent for broadband - and ALL broadband has some issues...period.) even though I am certain I am not that close to a tower.
If you have no life and sit playing online games such as WoW. Have your mommy and daddy buy you dsl or cable. If all you do is download pirated music or movies find your nearest locally owned music store where you can buy used cd's (which I don't care what anyone says are still better quality than downloaded stuff) and help support your local economy.
Don't get me wrong. I am no pro or saint and I do like P2P sites, but they should not be used obsessively. I just recently removed limewire because I desire quality over convenience.
And speaking of Download limits. Which I've heard they ALL have to a certain degree (even verizon and comcast) but I am not positive on that. I can't tell. The first month I had cricket I downloaded over 5gb's worth of software and misc. files not including the streaming video I watch and never got the first warning or cut-off. I haven't checked it recently cause I had cricket cut for 3 months (and to do that all you have to do is stop paying for it, I love the no contract part) cause I lost my job and had no income. It was $55 to get turned back on and I was back online within a few minutes. And my bill is 42 a month tax and all (would be $5 cheaper if you have phone service too).
Sometimes Customer service can be a very difficult issue. I originally bought it in Fort O' but they new jack **** about anything. When I had to reactivate luckily there was another store closer to where I lived and the time he took and consideration he gave me were tops. Calling the support center over the phone is always iffy. (If they are like most mobile carriers they outsource that department to overseas somewhere and I am more of a face to face consumer) and sometimes it is hard to get the modem to load on your computer (I had to reformat my hard drive just because I couldn't find the conflicting software but I am sure someone could have found a better way.)
True, speed can be an issue if your streaming movies or loading complex pages (If I compared it to the DSL connection running on a network I used at work it is only slightly slower, slightly faster if it is a crowded network). But it is possible to change some browser settings to slightly improve this issue. (what I've tested so far really didn't impress me) But I have learned what to do to best enjoy sites such as hulu and youtube. (relatively speaking of course)
Bottom line is........... What do you need it for. If your a business person on the go but with a limited travel range and need something where you can send quick emails (which I don't so don't take my word for that part) or medium sized file transfers or just looking up information. It does the job. And from where I'm sitting it does it rather well.
If your a gamer. Don't bother. Go outside get a game of tag or hide and seek going and get some sun on that pale pasty face. Unless you can handle the lag times and sometime problems with connection to the game server.
If you want to download misc. files. Remember the size of the file does matter, downloading a 2GB movie will take forever and can be rented much easier and if you can't wait long enough for it to come out on DVD find a flea market where a guy sells bootlegs cheap, (and yes their still around). Sending specs for a cabinet install to a foreman at the site over the internet barely took a few minutes.
If you have the physical memory and a good graphics accelerator and adjust a few browser settings and find a good tcp/ip optimizer that is easy to use with a usb modem (I haven't found a GOOD FREE one yet so if anyone knows please post it) Streaming (not downloading) and watching live shows on a site such as justintv exceeded my expectations.
I hope I did not offend anyone, this was just my opinion.
That being said if I had money to burn and a phone line run to the house I would have gotten DSL (I'll never have anything to do with comcast). I was hoping the EPB would have their system fully set up and available in my area, I am curious to see how that compares to all the rest. |

| reply to formeat In all honesty Cricket Broadband is a total waste! I have the phone service, which is pretty good. ($50 a month with unlimited calling, text, internet, and 200 roaming). But as for the broadband goes its terrible. I have a network set up at home and try to watch netflix off the Xbox360 and the best picture quality is only 2 bars. My neighbor upstairs has Cable and always receives 5 bars(Cricket's crappy download speed is slow and Bandwidth sucks). Thanks Cricket for your crappy wannabe high speed internet |
