anon : Flat out, cricket isn't an alternative and you're better off spending the extra 10-20 bucks for a quality service. It's connection is incredibly spotty, slow for downloads and uploads, and you can forget any chat or streaming video, unless you've got the patience of a saint. We've had the service for 2 weeks and already set up an appointment to get our old carrier back. I say this of course, assuming in your home the internet is used frequently and for more than just browsing basic websites. I would honestly recommend Cricket for broadband if it were about 20 bucks a month, because then I'd feel like I'm getting what I pay for.

anon : I've had Cricket for about 3 months in southern Wisconsin. We're in a rural area where there is no DSL or cable available, and Sprint and Verizon don't cover. The usb modem, activation, and first month cost $89, and got the $50 rebate in about 6 weeks. Service isn't as good as DSL, but way better than dial-up which is our only other choice. Downloads and uploads work fine and reasonably quickly, and video is fine if you let it buffer before you play. Monthly is $42.50, and it's by far the best choice for this location.

anon : Yes, for about one year, in Wichita Ks.
It worked well when I got it, speeds of 80-300 k-BITS (not bytes).
But it appears it has become popular, and now it is occassionally still 80-300 kBITS, but more typically, 30-50 kBITS. About the same as dial up.
And worse- there are now periods, EVERY WEEK, where it simply doesn't work- AT ALL- the web freezes for 20-30 minutes. It seems almost as if it's can't find bandwidth to get on. The little diagnostic program SAYS it logs on, and sure enough, it transfers maybe 4000-5000 bits, at 300 BITS (NOT KBITS, NOT BYTES, NOT KBYTES/sec, but 300 BITS per second). Then, nothing. For 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes. Happens EVERY WEEKEND now (afternoon and early evenings), and EVERY night (7-9 pm).
The good:
1) No Contract (it sucks soooo bad, I wouldn't even think about using it if there were one)
2) Price is x2 dial up, and speed averages...x2 dialup
3) Occasional, several times faster.
The bad:
1) Occasional, doesn't work- AT ALL
2) Price is 70% of cable, which KICKS CRICKETS ASS
3) It has HORRIBLE national coverage, I have found while travelling.
Summary:
Unless you can live with 3rd world reliability, and worse than 3rd worlds speeds- you will think it is tolerable.
anon : Just throwing my 2 cents in....I have had cricket for a little less than a year. I live outside the Chattanooga TN area and get very decent connection speed (at least decent for broadband - and ALL broadband has some issues...period.) even though I am certain I am not that close to a tower.

If you have no life and sit playing online games such as WoW. Have your mommy and daddy buy you dsl or cable. If all you do is download pirated music or movies find your nearest locally owned music store where you can buy used cd's (which I don't care what anyone says are still better quality than downloaded stuff) and help support your local economy.

Don't get me wrong. I am no pro or saint and I do like P2P sites, but they should not be used obsessively. I just recently removed limewire because I desire quality over convenience.

And speaking of Download limits. Which I've heard they ALL have to a certain degree (even verizon and comcast) but I am not positive on that. I can't tell. The first month I had cricket I downloaded over 5gb's worth of software and misc. files not including the streaming video I watch and never got the first warning or cut-off. I haven't checked it recently cause I had cricket cut for 3 months (and to do that all you have to do is stop paying for it, I love the no contract part) cause I lost my job and had no income. It was $55 to get turned back on and I was back online within a few minutes. And my bill is 42 a month tax and all (would be $5 cheaper if you have phone service too).

Sometimes Customer service can be a very difficult issue. I originally bought it in Fort O' but they new jack **** about anything. When I had to reactivate luckily there was another store closer to where I lived and the time he took and consideration he gave me were tops. Calling the support center over the phone is always iffy. (If they are like most mobile carriers they outsource that department to overseas somewhere and I am more of a face to face consumer) and sometimes it is hard to get the modem to load on your computer (I had to reformat my hard drive just because I couldn't find the conflicting software but I am sure someone could have found a better way.)

True, speed can be an issue if your streaming movies or loading complex pages (If I compared it to the DSL connection running on a network I used at work it is only slightly slower, slightly faster if it is a crowded network). But it is possible to change some browser settings to slightly improve this issue. (what I've tested so far really didn't impress me) But I have learned what to do to best enjoy sites such as hulu and youtube. (relatively speaking of course)

Bottom line is...........
What do you need it for. If your a business person on the go but with a limited travel range and need something where you can send quick emails (which I don't so don't take my word for that part) or medium sized file transfers or just looking up information. It does the job. And from where I'm sitting it does it rather well.

If your a gamer. Don't bother. Go outside get a game of tag or hide and seek going and get some sun on that pale pasty face. Unless you can handle the lag times and sometime problems with connection to the game server.

If you want to download misc. files. Remember the size of the file does matter, downloading a 2GB movie will take forever and can be rented much easier and if you can't wait long enough for it to come out on DVD find a flea market where a guy sells bootlegs cheap, (and yes their still around). Sending specs for a cabinet install to a foreman at the site over the internet barely took a few minutes.

If you have the physical memory and a good graphics accelerator and adjust a few browser settings and find a good tcp/ip optimizer that is easy to use with a usb modem (I haven't found a GOOD FREE one yet so if anyone knows please post it) Streaming (not downloading) and watching live shows on a site such as justintv exceeded my expectations.

I hope I did not offend anyone, this was just my opinion.

That being said if I had money to burn and a phone line run to the house I would have gotten DSL (I'll never have anything to do with comcast). I was hoping the EPB would have their system fully set up and available in my area, I am curious to see how that compares to all the rest.

So instead of me getting full bandwidth at the beginning of my billing cycle (like I have pretty much have every month in the past 7 months except the few occasions I've had to call and complain and ask for a reset) it appears that the cycle is *really* how many GB did i download between today, the 12th, and the 12th of last month. She stated that this was in the agreement I signed. So even though I've paid in advance for full bandwidth for October I will receive dialup speeds for the duration of my contract. I asked her to discontinue my service immediately and refund me the balance - she stated that this is impossible. I expected far much more for 40 dollars a month and, as a fairly longtime customer, better treatment too.

anon : Yeah and they really suck bad! It's a shame because it really doesn't have to be this way. I've had them for just over 4 months now. I live in deep south Texas and the first two months were really horrible. At times I was seeing sub-dialup speeds. I mean really, really sub-dialup. I'm talking 3kbits/sec and less! Dial-up is of course 56kbits/sec. It was so slow that I was embarrassed to tell anyone I had Cricket. I actually felt bad for Cricket for minute that a ISP could be so inept. After the two months the speed actually got decent for about 5 weeks. I started seeing speeds between 600kbits/sec to 1.1mbits/sec in the morning up until about noon. After noon speeds would slow to 300-400 kbits/sec. Still tolerable though. About three weeks ago speed slowed to 100kbits/sec and have been locked there every since no matter what time of day it is. That is not broadband or 1xEVDO. What it really is is 1xRTT. I sent them an email asking them what up and of course got no reply. Didn't waste my time calling with all the horror stories about Cricket out there. The fact that they didn't even reply to a paying customer speaks volumes. I use to work telecom (broadband) test and turnup and PC tech support so I would definitely know if the problem were on my end. It's ain't folks. They're brazenly lying to the public with their commercials the speed being locked at 100kbits/sec. It's amazing no state attorney general has picked up on this yet. They apparently ain't doing their job either. I'll be contacting mine though right after I type this. This is my last month with Cricket. Next month i'll give Sprint or Verizion a try.

If a client of Cricket actually operated at speeds of 700kps; then said client, considering the 5 Gig. limit, would only be allowed to experience the unlimited magical wonders of the internet and downloading for approximately 2 hours!!

Let's assume the data rate is 700 kbps (kilobits per second) and they limit you to 5 GB (gigabytes).

There are 8 bits/byte, however serial communications typically require "stop bits" and "parity bits" for framing and nominal error detection owing to the fact that occassional streams of 0000 or 1111 bits in a row at high speed can sometimes cause your modem to lose its place. The rule-of-thumb is 10 bits/byte sent or received (this also makes the calculation much easier in decimal.)

We'll also assume 1,000 = K, 1,000,000 = M, 1 billion = G (rather than powers of 2), again to keep the arithmetic simple.

So, 700,000 bits per second is equivalent to 70,000 bytes per second. 60 seconds/minute means 4,200,000 bytes per minute (4.2 MB/min). 60 minutes/hour means 252,000,000 bytes per hour (252 MB/hr).

Therefore, at their maximum data rate you'd expect to expend your 5 GB cap after a little less than 20 hours of continuous use.

So to clear up one possible point of confusion, Cricket is not offering 700 KBps (kilobytes per second) and if anyone thinks they are offering KBps then this calculation should clear it up for you. That's not to say you will see anything close to 700 Kbps (kilobits per second), or if you do that it can be sustained for 20 hours, but you should understand how these speeds are calculated so that your expectations are well-grounded.

Re: Any experience with Cricket Wireless Broadband?

anon : I'm in Las Vegas and have had Cricket for two days now and got what I expected: a slow-but-not-quite-as-bad-as-dial-up experience.

I made sure to buy from a Cricket corporate store (not a reseller) so as to ensure I'd get the best deal on the hardware, and I did. The modem Was $50 (soon to be $0 once I send a $50 rebate) and the activation was $25 plus the first month of service for free. So just under $80 out the door.

Speeds average 0.2-0.5 megabits per second. I tried out Guild Wars (an MMORPG) and averaged about a half a second ping, which worked fine. I can even watch Hulu (if I give it a minute or two to buffer). I subscribe to Napster's streaming music and songs load fine, sometimes stopping to buffer (I just pause a few seconds and let it buffer).

Cricket is replacing my Cox cable internet (which I missed a payment on, then they shut me off, then wanted $150 to turn back on so I just let them go). I was considering Embarq DSL (but I don't want digital phone and don't want anymore contracts). So I settled on Cricket.

I've decided to not try and limit my usage at all for this initial month, and see just how they will or will not throttle me. I think in this last two days I've already downloaded a total of about 2GB so that 5GB soft cap will be reached in no time. I'm connected more than half the day and will be every single day.

So I'm making no effort whatsoever to be frugal in my bandwidth usage or connection time in order to see just how much slower this service can get (as if it wasn't already slow enough).

I'll post again once I've reached (or think I've reached) my 5GB soft cap, and report if anything changes. As for now I'm happy with it and am getting used to a slower Internet: it's actually weaned me off just sitting in front of my PC clicking stuff. I think before I click now and I appreciate pages more. There's a sense of value to each link I click. Okay, now I'm getting a bit too philosophical.

No dropped connections yet, by the way. I get two bars most of the time, sometimes three.

So we'll see how Cricket holds up over this next month as my fulltime Internet for my work (I download about 100mb of files daily), my web browsing (I browse about 500mb of pages a day), my games, streaming shows and music. I'm kind of teetering on the edge of what Cricket does and doesn't want out of their broadband customer.

We'll see if I get throttled.

anon : There is some bad news for those who believe that there is more than one company that can offer this type of service. Earlier today I spoke with every phone company in the area including the largest (Not to name anyone specific), It turns out the "network" cannot offer somthing for a real "on the go" office worker. I need to be able to connect and be connected 40 hours per week. The responce I revieved was "We cannot help you in that type of area". So even though it can be a pain with the modem as well as the costs Which for those wondering it is $150.00 for the modem and the $25.00 activation fee Which normally then your first month of service is free. I refuse to have Cricket as a Cell phone company but as a moble internet handler, This was the only real option I had.

Cricket is a new and cut-rate network, so they don't have the field experience with their cell sites of a Verizon or Sprint. And CDMA, which they use, is tough to engineer well: the number of subscribers using it will effect signal strength and your data rate, so they need to keep adding cell sites as they get more popular. If they don't, you go elsewhere.

Personally, I'm happy to be spending $20+ per month less than I would on Sprint or VZ or AT&T. I got that code from a tech support for cricket cause there is a field test option that he needed me to check for him cause I have been having issues with them for like 2 mnths due to the fact that the modem as is doesn't connect all the tome just disconnects every few minutes like an old school dial up connection would so me being nosey I wrote down the code & ctrl + D shortcut command & looked and messed with it so as I am still fighting with cricket about the coverage as they say is only in this small part of my apartment complex even though I have 3 towers near by it is just the back section of the complex even though you can see the towers from across the bayopu less than a mile away pretty sad so I complain they get trouble tickets in not sure if anyone has ever had cricket tech support come to there home & actually do something but I did after calling the corporate office and they figured out it was teh upgrade to there tpwers that they did & are kind of fixing it but I am catching them in lies about calling me and so on they even said they left me a voice mail but funny thing is I have no voice mail on my cell phone.
anon : Hello I live in southern Illinois and I have been using cricket for just shy of a month now and it isnt perfect, but it seems to be the best option for my location. I am rural and cannot get cable or DSL. My mother lives nearby and has satellite internet and it is way slower.

I 1st tried millenicom's unlimited package but the signal was VERY unreliable. Verizon phones barely work here and I expect that's why, millenicom uses verizon towers I believe. They will tell you that you are in an excellent coverage area but that is meaningless until you test for a signal around your house. I even purchased a cyfre antenna and amp to boost the signal and that did not help at all. When the signal was strong enough for a connection, the download speeds did seem to be faster than with cricket but that was rare.

I also believe cricket uses sprint towers. As I said its a bit slower but I can always connect and using the same antenna I had placed in the attic I can get 2 bars all the time. I havent experienced any throttling of the speeds yet that I am aware of but it is the 3rd week since I have had it and I suspect I am way over the 5 GB soft limit. To give an idea of the speed youtube vids are a bit choppy but most of the time I can stream music without interruption up to 128 kps.

My advice would be if you can get cable or dsl where you live, dont even consider an air card, it is not comparable. But for people in my situation who cannot get cable or DSL broadband, the air card solution is far preferable to satellite. I would advise you to find a friend with a sprint phone and one with verizon and check the signal strengths where you live as this will be the primary determinant of how well the service works. The local cricket guy even offered to come out where I live and test it before I bought it. You also have 3 days to return it and I believe a week with millenicom to mail back the device for a full refund. Then go with millenicom or cricket as they offer the same services without the contract BS of verizon or sprint.

Hope that is useful to someone.

anon : I purchased a Cricket um100 modem and their wireless internet service at a franchised store to give it a try. I paid 90 dollars out the door.

In the 24 hours that I kept the modem, I tried various things with it. I was satisfied with being able to get a connection in the three counties I visited. I was very satisfied that my text messages were sent and received extremely quickly. I had read reports that cricket texts take forever on their phones. I was able to browse web pages perfectly fine. I was even able to view youtube videos fine. The download for the videos was just a hair faster than the viewing speed so it didn't have to buffer at all, but wasn't nearly as fast as cable. Then I tried online gaming. BZFlag, to be specific. Booting up the game and attempting to get the list of available servers took several minutes, as opposed to the normal 1-3 seconds. I was puzzled by this as the list is purely text. After trying this several dozen times, I concluded that had to be something with regard to ports/firewall. I think the initial requests were being blocked by Cricket and perhaps the game did a work around by obtaining the list through a http connection instead...after several minutes of failure. So at least I was able to eventually get a gaming list. This isn't good though because you typically change to different games several times an hour. Once in the games, I got a relatively good connection which surprised me. My lag and jitter were a bit higher than usual, but acceptable. No packet loss. I was able to play most of the games.
Throughout the trial I used speakeasy's speed test. I typically saw 500-900k download and 800-900 upload. Almost always the upload was higher. This surprises me because most posts on this thread shows uploads around 100k. Anyways, a decent connection as far as I'm concerned. I was pretty happy overall with it, but ultimately I returned it within 24 hours of purchase after deciding that the wait for the gaming list was going to be unacceptable. I returned the modem and got a 100% refund. For what it's worth, he didn't know how to do a refund and had to call for help. He said it was the first refund they had ever done. I had made sure when purchasing that I could return it if i didn't like the service and he said I could within 24 hours. I had mine for 23:53 hours at the time of return.
I had planned on getting cell phone service from them as well. It was not until after I returned the modem that I found this and many other threads describing the horrors of Cricket service. I think I have definitely decided against their cell phone service, but I find myself almost hourly considering getting their wireless internet service again. It seems it would work pretty good, if I could just bring myself to give up my favorite game...
One thing I did not try was FTP and I wish I had. I definitely need FTP for my webhost and couldn't have imagined that FTP would be blocked. The earlier gentleman from chicago said he was unable to FTP which concerns me...

I am curious, is anyone else able to FTP on cricket? Also, am I the oddball who got high upload and lower download speeds??

iansltx : My limited experience with CricKet (tested out a CompCal modem in my area, which included in town, 2 miles outside of twon and on top of a hill 3 miles outside of town). Fortunately I didn't have to pay for the trial of the service.

PROS
1. Cost - $40 per month is less than anyone but TWC charges for broadband out here, though TWC's $40 package, albeit fixed, is MUCh faster.
2. Latency - CricKet runs a 99.9% Level3 network; L3 o most areas, XO to maybe one or two. I'm in an L3 area, so the traffic gets from me to, say, SoftLayer in very few hops. Much less than with Sprint or Verizon. as a result, I've seen 65-90ms to SoftLayer versus 110-130 on Sprint.
3. No contracts - If you don't like the service, discontinue the service and sell the modem. It's that simple.
4. Ease of setup - Plug the modem in, software installation pops up. Install software, restart. start the connection manager, then hit connect. You're online. Signal bars can be seen on the modem as well as onscreen, though the software isn't quite the best (I use a Mac for such things and find that the 3G meter that I suppose is built into OS X is much more unobtrusive and quite functional).
5. Software features - Only one good thing about the software: it has a rather comprehensive connection graph for speed and data transferred. +1 for that.
6. Caps - After you hit 5GB you're throttled a bt, but not totally cut off. This is a very good thing, versus being cut off from the internet entirely. Though whether you'll be able to stand using 10gB of data over the connection is a whole other deal...

CONS
1. Private IP address - You're firewalled, and things don't work too well with CricKet's firewall. Didn't keep track of what IP I ended up resolving to on the public side each time I connected, but I know on the private side it was a different IP on 10.x.x.x every time.
2. Hardware quality - The CompCal modem feels like a toy more than any other broadband modem I've come across. Then again, it's probably because Comp-Cal is a no-name, I don't like no-name handset manufacturers and the modem is green all over and has about five LEDs on it (signal bars, connection status).
3. Software requirements - Windows and OS X have perfectly good connection managers on their own. Sure you can't send text messages over them but I'm not terribly thrilled that anything beyond a driver was needed. If you're going to make me use a connection manager, at least give me a db reading for signal (AT&T does this).
4. Signal strength - I don't think I ever got a full four bars of signal (why not five bars? Because the modem only goes up to four). This was even in the middle of town, in a truck; n big buildings in town so nothing really to block the signal. Outside of town most of my house was a dead spot; had to sit outside in the car to get one or two bars. In town at a local coffee shop two bars was standard fare. Three miles out of town signal was iffy enough to push uploads below 64 kbps.
5. Connection quality - The internet connection just didn't "feel" reliable. Page timeouts, etc. Just not a good experience; when it worked it worked quite well but unreliability isn't nice.
6. Connection speed - They must only have a single T1 to my town, and a single tower that it's feeding to. 1045/400 was my highest score I'm pretty sure, with more typical results being around 600/200 to 700/300. That was when I was trying for a decent signa; low signal areas went to 1x or cut out entirely. At any rate, Sprint and Verizon are a good bit faster. My Sprint phone (HTC Touch pro) can pull 1300/600 kbps (just isn't doing it tonight for some odd reason), and from what I hear data cards are faster than phones.
7. Modem choice - I know what you're thinking "It's just a modem" but CricKet doesn't let resellers get the UTStarCom modems anymore, at least that's what I gather. Even though I have a feeling that the UTS modem might've performed better in my situation. Maybe not but having two modems to choose from is always a nice thing (though with T-Mobile you're limited to one right now from Huawei, a slightly less off-brand provider). Back to ranting about CompCal, they don't make any EvDO device for cricKet other than the modem, and CompCal branding is mostly invisible on their products. as an added bonus, I don't know of one US carrier who uses them other than CricKet.

Bottom lne: CricKet isn't serious about the internet speace yet, at least in my experience. They don't know how to run a decent mobile broadband network. You get what you pay for, or maybe less. Signal strength might be decent if you connected a $70 grid antenna setup to the modem, but then we're talking fixed wireless instead of mobile.

So try cricKet out in your area with a demo card if you can. Don't shell out for the CompCal without testing, that's for sure. Otherwise you may well be in for a world of disappointment when the internet works fine one minute and lousy the next.

What can you do with 2 bars? Turn off you computer and go do something else. Paying $35-$40 dollars a month for this service is like flushing money down the toilet. May I suggest a visit to your local library?

anon : I had Cricket Wireless "Broadband" from March 1 to April 25 2009. Yeah there's a reason why I didn't have it for very long. First off, I almost never got anything above 2 bars. I kept being kicked off the internet even though I was still connected to cricket. (Yeah, I was connected to Cricket, but not the Internet. This problem happened A LOT) The piece of shit kept going "Dormant" on me at the most inconvenient times and Firefox kept crashing on me while I used Cricket. Firefox crashed about 2-4 times a DAY when I was connected to it via Cricket and I experienced dial-up speeds on IE.

YouTube was horrible with Cricket as it would usually take me 15 minutes to watch a 5 minute video and uploading pics to Photobucket would take 5 times as long as they should. I constantly lost signal and I had many failed connection attempts because "the remote computer failed to respond" meaning I had to unplug the damn thing and then plug it back in which meant I had to wait EVEN MORE for the modem to power on. Getting kicked off of Firefox or the connection going 'dormant' often meant having to disconnect and then re-connect and I would sometimes repeat this process just 10-20 minutes later because it went 'dormant' again.

As for the rebate, they tell you that you have to wait 60 days to get it, but what they don't tell you is that you have to have the service for 45 days to even GET the rebate and then you have to wait 60 days FROM THE END OF THE FIRST 45 DAYS to have the rebate. In other words, you're looking at no rebate for a minimum of 105 days. I had it for nearly 60 days and it was horrible. After weeks of frustration, I ditched Cricket and bought a wireless router and it works A LOT BETTER. The Wireless router is up to 3 times faster than Cricket and I can watch YouTube as if I was using cable internet.

Overall, Cricket is a decent phone provider but a HORRIBLE Internet provider. I would definitely NOT recommend getting this service, it's not worth the hassle as speeds are around 100K (Faster than 56K, but much slower than cable).

I also have the samsung messenger (the green one) and I have had some problems with that as well. I think for the price its pretty decent. Also my first day of using the cricket a600/evdo I downloaded 1.5g and I KNOW I am way over this so called cap but I haven't seen any changes in speed connection nothing. So I agree with this other dude that the cap is just a scare tactic, just to keep people from using to much bandwidth. And p2p does work but of course not as good as dsl or cable.Read the fine print, it does say some scary things about watch what you do and say. So uh yea if you on the grind be careful and if you on the net watch what you look at and do. I also heard somewhere that they may report to the p2p police??? whatever...
Pghwireman : I needed a wireless broadband connection for a project in the Pittsburgh area that will last the next six months. The object was to get a faster than dial up connection to the job foreman.

Although Verizon has a month to month plan they murder you with the purchase of a modem up front. I didn't want to sign a 1 year contract for only 6 months of use and face ETF so I opted for the service from Cricket.

The service was activated Friday (2/20)and the speed results on the job were only in the 200 to 300 Kbs range in the building that my company is working in. We are getting a weak signal mostly one bar but occasionally 2 bars max.

The building is built like a fortress with multiple levels, few windows & either block or concrete walls. The owner had a repeater antennas installed for Verizon and ATT to enhance cell service within the building. Unfortunately the antennas are tuned to those carriers and does nothing to enhance the Cricket signal

I did some research and a found booster antenna for the Cricket modem but I'm reluctant to purchase one due to the construction of the building. I'm not certain that the signal can be boosted because of the building construction. Maybe somebody here can help me out with that decision.

The foreman at the job site needs to send/receive emails maybe 40% with CAD drawings, spreadsheets or PDF attachments most which are less that 1 meg. On the job 200-300Kbs is much better than dialup where the connection speed was only 45kbs.

I took the modem home and installed it on my desktop and played around at speedtest.net today to see what kind of speed I could get out this service. I can only get 2 full bars of reception at home but the control panel for the modem says that I'm connected at anywhere from 57% to 67% signal strength. Even with marginal reception I was surprised at the speeds I was getting. I selected Frederick, MD as my test site and got as high as 747 Kbs up 159 down and as low as 313 Kbs up 121 down over a range of 4 to 5 tests. The latency seems poor overall in the 280 to 550 ms range. Overall, it appears that the speeds are in the DSL range.

I don't know what speeds Verizon or Sprint users typically get but for only using this service for a day or so with limited reception it seems like it will work. The customer's facility manager uses Verizon wireless in the building. We tested his speed and found it to be in the 350 to 400 kbs range utilizing the antenna system within the building. Even with not so great reception the Cricket solution isn't too far behind!

I don't think I would cancel my cable service and switch to Cricket for home use but for the application as stated above it seems to provide a decent service at a reasonable cost. As always - YMMV

anon : ok so i got this thing back in february of this year and it worked great...for about 6 months the past 2 have been horrible max speed is 20kb which to me seems really lame for a so called "broadband" connection...btw i used to get 60k down even on a low signal now i got 4 bars constantly and can't get past 20k...it's convenient for me to be able to take this thing anywhere i go i'm in college so i do a lot of research online for school and maybe a lil just cuz i'm a nerd lol. anyways i bought into theirs cuz it was half price from what verizon was charging. i found out later on that they do have the 5GB cap which they never told me but the one time i got a chance to check out the speeds on verizon it was too slow i thought. ping times were over 200ms and the speeds weren't that great either...so i got cricket and now my ping times are up over 400ms...speedtest.net reports 100kbps down and 300kbps up which i thought was kind of funny cuz crickets TOS prohibits running servers on that connection(ironic isn't it?) well anyways thats my two cents...if u need wireless internet get it cuz it's the cheapest thing out...if u don't need wireless then get a hard wired DSL or cable connection cuz those are so much faster...oh yeah i also removed the cap on windows TCP cuz that crap was just annoying i was only getting half the speed i should no matter what service i had cept for dialup but ur not gonna get much past 5k on a dialup anyways and the cap doesn't make a difference

I call them up and they tell me to uninstall the software and that should work. Nope, I am getting 2 bars and it will not connect. So then I think the device is defective and call tech again. She tells me take it to the store to have them test it. So I take it to the store and the dumb girl working goes" o on your account tech said nothing about taking it into the store and we can't test it here. So I call Up tech and they add it to the account and I take it in and they charge me $45 dollars to look at it and if it it not defective I get a $35 dollar credit back. So they send out, give me a new one. Get home plug it in and it works for 1 hour and goes out. WTF. So I then take my laptop and drive to the nearest cell tower 3 miles away and test it and 4 bars and it works. Then drive a mile away and test it and 3 bars and works. Then go infront of my house and test it and it dont work. Walk in the back yard and it works. Only the main room in the house it will connect to with 2 bars. And I Ask how come all along it has worked and all of a sudden the signal gets lost in the house. Your telling me I basically have to walk outback by the cows to get online? Somebody messed with the towers and now this crap dont work in the house. And I am going to have to eat a $45 dollar fee beacuse they could not test it in store?? We value your feedback. Cheap, no contracts...great for quick email checking or instant messengers...but heaven help you if you want to downlaod attachments, as a 1.5 meg file took almost 2 hours and then failed to complete. WHen I say slow, often times the modem simply sits idling (no data transfer) and they have a nifty utility that shows you real time the transfer speeds. My first call to tech support using the number that came with the equipment netted me the knowledge that is the wrong tech number, so they gave me another one that rang to some recorded message.
formeat : Thanks! I really appreciate your detailed reply. It perfectly illustrates how valuable this site is, and the depth of knowledge it's users have.

It'd be great to find a cheaper Internet connection than my current $52/month, especially being I'm not hosting sites or using major bandwidth. And I don't really need wireless or mobility, either. But my connection has always been stable, and with speeds about 50% better than advertised. Obviously, no connection at any price is cost effective if it's unstable.

I've thought of switching to DSL, but now that I'm using MagicJack, I don't need someone elses phone service. And that in itself drives the cost right back up to what I'm currently paying.

I'll keep looking for a cheaper alternative, but it just doesn't seem like there are any out there.

iansltx : Max Signal, nope and nope...

Here's a thread that might help ya,

»howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1378641

Anyway, there is a 5GB per month limit, looks to be a soft cap though, on their service. EvDO Rev. A is overlaid on most of their network at is EvDO...which isn't all of it still...

Speeds look to be about 1 Mbit down, 300 kbit up. You may be able to get 1200/500 though, with one person reporting 1400/900 right across from a tower.

The cost of startup is the cost of the modem plus the activation fee, though you might be able to waive the latter. So $150 or so after taxes and the mail-in rebate on the modem.

Taxes and fees should be minimal since we're talking about a data connection and not a voice one...just a few bucks per month on top of your $40. Though they could be more if CricKet wants to gouge...though if I remember correctly your state has very little in the vein of cellular taxes so you should pay pretty close to that $40.

And yes, they have no contracts, deposits or ETFs and you can take your modem anywhere CricKet has coverage and still have internet, though again in some places it will be quite slow (a few times faster than dialup) due to their not rolling out EvDO everywhere.

The bottom line is, before you commit to getting the card, make double-sure you have a good CricKet signal where you'll be using the modem. Vegas is a new market so this may or may not be the case. Then use a usage tracking program to make sure you aren't using more than 5GB of data per month.

Then check your cable company and see if they have a lower-priced tier that is around 1 Mbit down and 384k up (what you'll get from CricKet more than likely...though speeds may lessen on CricKet over time due to tower loading) and if so you probably want to go with that.

If they don't, check for DSL with the same qualifications...you *should* be able to get 1.5 Mbit DSL (faster than CricKet would be) for a lower price than what you'd pay for the mobile service.

In short, if you already have a high speed connection you'd be saving maybe $10 a month...though you'd only be doing so after amortizing the cost of the modem, which would take well over a year. You'd have a slower connection, with higher latency (though it shouldn't be prohibitively high so as to make gaming\VoIP impossible) that what your cableco is providing you, and you'd want to keep under the 5 GB a month limit, which I personally can't do.

The big draw of CricKet's mobile high speed internet is...well...mobility, though. So if you are willing to make those tradeoffs to get a service that you can use anywhere CricKet has service (which isn't exactly anywhere...they're focused on large cities and *maybe* the corridors between them) then the service will be good for you. But I wouldn't dump cable for CricKet Mobile Broadband just 'cuz it's cheaper. In that case, you should dump cable for DSL...or ask for a lower cable speed tier.

formeat : Can anyone provide feedback on Cricket's $40.00/month Wireless Broadband service? They began advertising this heavily in the Las Vegas NV area last weekend. It uses a small USB plug-in modem.

I'm curious about the real cost of start-up ("requires new activation AND up to a $25 activation fee"), the true monthly cost ("taxes and fees extra"), and some of their disclaimers:

* Throughput may be limited if use exceeds 5GB per month.
* Internet browsing does not include, "Machine-to-machine connections, "Peer to peer (P2P) connections."

They state that there's no contract term, no security deposit, and no "carrier's" early termination fee.

I'd just want it for home use, and to save a few bucks over the $52/mo I currently shell out for cable broadband.

Thanks!
