Cogeco Phone

What ATA is Cogeco giving out to new phone subscribers? I'd like to know what features are available before I consider switching over from Primus Talkbroadband.

I do like the email feature TBB has, where they email a copy of the message left at your home to whatever email address you setup. I have it sent to my blackberry so I can listen to my messages without having to call home.

Does anyone have a side by side comparison of features for Primus TBB and Cogeco Digital Phone?

Some further questions:

1. Does this eMTA handle QOS for VoIP packets? At this time, my managed Netgear switch is doing QOS for VoIP traffic.

2. Can you pull 3 public IPs via DHCP with the DHG535?

3. Is download/upload speed affected by this eMTA?

Thanks.

Primus has a website that I can log into using my phone number and password, and manage phone features and have a complete history of inbound/outbound calls. Does the Cogeco service offer this as well?

I don't believe Cogeco has anything like that, which is the whole reason why I am sticking with Primus rather than switching to Cogeco.

There is no online portal for any VOIP features, only self-care for internet service.

Service level is a consideration. My Cogeco phone line died yesterday (sunday). This is the second time in as many years. you may or may not view that as excessive. They were unable to correct the problem remotely and will have to send a serviceperson out. The earliest they were able to send someone will be Tuesday. Again, you may or may not view that as excessively slow. I will have to be home from 8-5pm since they would not book appointments at a specific hour. The call center person refused to give me the name of her manager nor connect me to her manager. This, to me, is inexcusable behavior, even though I was very polite. You may or may not have the same view.

In this case, it was the LINE1 port (i.e. telephone line 1) on the modem. The internet continued to work. They do not have the ability to swap the line over to the LINE2 socket on the modem. Nor do they support customer-swap of the modem. I live not too far from their office and am able to do the swap, but they don't allow it due to that special locking tool they use to fasten the cable to the modem.

Other than, what to me are too frequent outages, and slow repair, the service is fine and normally works. Up until this second outage, I really had no reason to even consider returning to Bell, but I'm giving it some thought now. We'll see how it goes. Your milage may vary of course.

Sorry to hear that Rollerblader7
The lock is put on there for a reason, and I think the best example would be the childs death in Alberta recently, when the 911 was dispatched to another city, this way we comply with CRTC regulations for emta location on file.

As for the line2 issue, well, we are kind of at the mercy or RCA or Motorola, with what tools we get, and what and whatnot we can do to the modem. I hear this type of thing now and then out in teh field, that "people" never had an issue with Bell, in x amount of years, but this is new technology, we rely on a link for you to be able to get a dialtone, all links, can fail, it happens, I suspect a power outage or the like for you on Sunday? That is what I have been seeing as the cause lately. 3 of them today, where the phone is out, but the net works. it is normally the opposite.

I love my Cogeco Phone. A little pricey considering the alternatives, and apparently lacking some features I wasn't aware of. But I am still way ahead of the game. My bill was 1.5 times what it was with Bell.

Sunday to a Tuesday booking is not to bad. I was speaking with a Bell service guy today and he was working on a job that was booked 6 days prior. Companies do get busy.

As far as not being able to talk to a manager, I'm sure everyone that calls in would love to talk to a manager. It's not like they can do much more for you. Anyone calling in to a service call center has a service related issue. All a company can do is try to resolve if a fast as humanly possible.

Primus does have a decent product, the problem lies in the support. If you have a problem, no one can come check it out. Either way, if you have an issue, there will be a a wait.
