You make a weak counter-argument in that there is only "downloading movies from itunes", but there are others such as Netflix's play now feature which allows me to stream movies to my PC. Due to limited availabilty of titles has this not fully taken off. Once studio execs and Netflix can come to an agreement I will no longer need to get my Netflix movies via standard mail. I will stream all my movies!
But wait. Now I have to take into consideration that my ISP is capping my monthly usage to 40GB and I might run out available "minutes" (blatant cell phone analogy) or pay overage charges. Completely backwards in my opinion and in no way benefits the customer.
Setting these caps only serve to stifle bandwidth intensive apps that both utilize fast connections while threatening cable's own products. Why would I use my cable TV service if it now possible to watch my favorite TV show via the Internet?? Furthermore, cable is now behind Verizon's FiOS in the bandwidth arena and it doesn't appear they're yet willing to invest seriously in their own infrastructure.
And for the small percentage of people who abuse the system they should be the ones being targeted, not the entire customer base. This again supports my argument that cable's ultimate goal is to stifle bandwidth intensive services and not invest in their own infrastructure. |
