When you talk about gobs of space, is that all to do with the analog deletion or is that a combination with upgrades? Also how much room do they actually have now,are they maxed out until more upgrades.Sorry about all the questions
I'll regurgitate some of the numbers that I've read on this forum and others. When Verizon is done with this expansion (eliminating analogs, and expanding out to the full 135 QAMs), they'll have a good amount of space. Based on the fact that Verizon runs MPEG-2, and the fact that they themselves don't do any additional compression, the numbers work out this way. Each QAM can carry 2 HD channels, or 9 - 10 SD digital channels.

Verizon has committed to 150 HD channels by end of the year. That works out to 75 QAMs. That leaves 60 for SD. Which comes out to nearly 600 SD channels. That's what I'm talking about.

Heck, the elimination of the analogs alone creates enough room for an additional 80 HD channels (they had slots for 40 analog channels per market).

I'm also surprised to only see an HD version of Smithsonian. Again, Verizon indicated that they would carry it both in SD and HD.
I didn't think there was an SD version. (?)

Things like NASA TV
Yes!

Right now I get it part time on a PEG, which is better than nothing, but not nearly good enough -- it tends to switch to local programming just at the moment when something interesting is about to happen.
Well, there's a Smithsonian SD feed on VOD. And when Verizon announced the addition of the channel, they specifically said both SD and HD versions. Maybe the SD version is coming later.
There is no SD version. They said they would carry VOD in SD & HD. Smithsonian is only available in HD.

No they're still very clearly listed in the PDF version which has the complete lineup.

A news breif, on the first of July, could say "Telephone poles around Fort Wayne burst into flames. Details at 11". But, impossible scenarios aside, this could be viewed as a good time to do this, as the regular TV season is over. But, people still have series recordings going on and that's something that will have to be addressed.

And, the new season of Stargate: Atlantis starts in early July, so I hope people around here will know that it'll now be on Ch. 180.

This would also be a good time to impliment a "search by channel" feature in the guide, especially with so much more programming to wade through and channels to surf. But, I'm not holding my breath.

Hopefully, Verizon will send us all a info pack with everything we need to know about the June 30th changes. Or, our Verizon phone lines will be burning up on July 1st. Even if the poles don't catch fire. Mark F.

I believe the series recordings are based on channel name, not number, so they should be ok.

I'm moving to a place on the 13th of June that is FiOS-enabled in Denton, TX. I read somewhere on here that the Texas and Florida FiOS networks would not get these HD channels in July but rather later in 2008. Is there a reason for this? When should I expect my market to be able to receive those HD channels?

They're rolling out new HDs market by market, somebody has to be last but it's likely because from what we can deduce, the HDs come after the analog channels (2-49) are removed. TX and FL are apparently last in line for that.

See: »*Master Topic* FiosTV Going 100% Digital/All Markets for the supposed schedule for analog channel removal.

Yes, that's right. They need to remove the analogs to create the room for these HD channels. They're doing that market by market (in addition, as they're eliminating analogs, they're expanding their network to handle yet more programming). Without this expansion, they don't have the room to add the new channels. Unforutnately TX is one of the last states (may actually BE the last state - I don't remember) to get upgraded.

Ha!

Nothing has been announced for anything beyond OR on 7/9. We can all make a best guess for later in July or August for folks with completed shutdowns in June... but that's all they are unless someone with some not-so-public info cares to share it

I said this before, but I wish they just had to flip a big grey switch to shut the analog off and flip the blue switch to turn the hd on

I suspect Verizon wishes the same thing.

Not to nitpick, but shut-down for the Philly area is 6/23, not 6/13. I take it that's the date that they START analog shut-down, is that correct? We have a pretty large VHO, so it wouldn't surprise me if it took a little while. I'm hoping for end of July for the new channels, but I'm betting it'll be early/mid August.

More reason to get a TiVoHD. No problems with shuffling of channels, things still record as they should. And my guide data has always been populated on the day the channel is added.
