But that doesn't effect cable. Verizon is getting rid of its own analog channels. That's going on right now. For example, in the Philly area, we're set to lose our analogs next week.

At the same time, Verizon is expanding the bandwidth for their TV feed. We (again, in the Philly area) should be getting these new channels (hopefully) in August.

Mark F : I agree, people who expected certain channels to be broadcasting/cablecasting in HD by now, and those channels are still SD only, are unhappy. But, more channels are coming, soon, both SD and HD. And, by the end of this year or early next (an excruciatingly long time for some), there will be even more than that. Enabling the FIOS DVRs and STBs to go to 2,000 channels means that they are serious about that. Still, there will always be folks that will complain that they can't watch the Chinese Checkers Channel or the Nude Needlepoint Network (In HD, of course).

I really like HD. However, there are many people, and I am one of them, who won't forsake a favorite show just because it's in SD, although I am a bit more picky. When I watch an older show, i try to record only the episodes that I really want to see again. But, the generic descriptions in the guide- "Magnum PI. A former Naval officer agrees to provide security for a millionaire in exchange for living on his estate while doing private investigation work on the side" as the IMG says- offers very little help.

I like many things, both old and new, But, even if they offer many channels I don't or won't watch, I'm sure that there are other people who will. That is the real power of FIOS, offering something for everyone.

So, although I'm not into the roar of the crowd and crack of the bat or hushed tones and fairway action, others may not be into watching Deep Purple in concert from 1968, Columbo from 1974 or Blade Runner from 1983. When Verizon is done with this expansion (eliminating analogs, and expanding out to the full 135 QAMs), they'll have a good amount of space. Based on the fact that Verizon runs MPEG-2, and the fact that they themselves don't do any additional compression, the numbers work out this way. Each QAM can carry 2 HD channels, or 9 - 10 SD digital channels.

Verizon has committed to 150 HD channels by end of the year. That works out to 75 QAMs. That leaves 60 for SD. Which comes out to nearly 600 SD channels. That's what I'm talking about.

Heck, the elimination of the analogs alone creates enough room for an additional 80 HD channels (they had slots for 40 analog channels per market).

I was also surprised to not see FX HD on there, or Fox Business HD - I know that last is a new channel, but Verizon said that they would carry it when they had the room.

I'm also surprised to only see an HD version of Smithsonian. So in the Philly area we'll have 56 HD channels when we get them.

I actually think it's going to be a few more than that. I believe they're still in negotiation with these channel providers, and can't disclose that the channels will be available. I wouldn't be surprised if the number of HD we get will actually be 30 new ones (some prominent ones seem to be missing from that first list, which I expected to be there - FX, e.g., and Fox Business).

FiOS TV to add 27 new HD channels in July

RScottyL : From »www.engadgethd.com/2008/06/04/ru···in-july/ :

Although rumors from well respected forum posters give us a good reason to get excited, there's nothing quite like getting confirmation from the source. The linked PDF is the FiOS lineup that will be effective next month n Portland and includes 27 new HD channels not currently available to FiOS customers. As you might expect, Verizon had to really shuffle up the the lineup -- posted after the jump -- to add this many channels, which now includes just about every HD channel anyone would want; like eight premium movie channels and all the latest cable channels like Sci Fi HD and CNN HD. These new channels will really help propel FiOS from last to first in regards to HD quantity, by over doubling the number of HD channels offered. Unfortunately, there's no word on when the rest of the FiOS customers will have access to these channels, but if you live in a FiOS area, and the analog channels are already gone, there's a good chance they'll come sooner, rather than later.

USA – 550
TBS – 552
ESPNews – 572
Big Ten Network – 585
Versus/ Golf – 590
Outdoor – 591
CNN – 600
CNBC – 602
MSNBC – 603
The Weather Channel – 619
Science – 622
Smithsonian – 625
History – 628
Animal Planet – 630
TLC – 639
Lifetime West – 640
Lifetime Movie Network West – 642
Sci-Fi – 680
MOJO – 682
Bravo – 685
Starz Kids and Family – 841
Starz Comedy – 842
Starz Edge – 843
Showtime West – 866
Showtime 2 – 867
HBO West – 901
Cinemax West – 921
